  • Using DA over the tree sap?

Does anyone here know if I can use a DA on a car that is bombarded with tree sap? I want to detail my mother's jeep but it is littered with tree sap.

Blobs of tree sap roughly the size of dimes?

They have been on the car for years and there is NO way I can get it off, so my question is : will it be damaging for the pads if I use a DA over it? The blobs are not that thick.

What have you tried to remove the tree sap? Or you are just asking because you think it could be faster with the DA?

Chances are that with the DA the pad will just rotate over the sap and it wouldn't remove it.

Do you have any Meguiar's Glass Cleaner Concentrate?
If you do, dilute it 1:1 a use it, I've have great success with it.

I tried the DA on treesap no success, even with ultimate compound.

Ya gots to get the tree sap off first. Otherwise you are just wasting your time. Do a search on tree sap removal. Any way you look at it, it's work.

Yea, you can use the DA over the tree sap, but you have to remove the sap first. I was camping and ended up getting sap all over the hood of my truck. I found that some laquer thinner worked great getting it off with some gentle rubbing. Followed by a hand application of M80 then NXT 2.0, you cannot tell I ever had an issue. No matter what, you have some work to correct the situation. Good luck.

You might want to try something a little more gentle than lacquer thinner. I suggest iso-alcohol (the stuff you buy in a quart can at the hardware store) or mineral spirits. Let the product sit on the sap for a good long while so that it can do its job. Do one small area at a time. It is going to take a while -- a long while.

I like the d-line glass cleaner to remove the sap. But no matter what method you use, you have to remove the sap first.

Here's what I would try, in order:

                1) I would attempt to remove the tree sap by the application of a product like Gold Class Bug & Tar Remover, Stoner Tarminator, or Wd-40. If these did not work ...

                2) I would attempt to remove the tree sap by claybarring the paint surface. If this did not work ...

                3) I would abrade the paint surface with my DA and polish or compound; in other words, I would treat the sap as any other defect that needs to be removed. Meguiar's recommends that I begin with the least aggressive polish, so I would begin with SwirlX. If this did not work, I would move up to Ultimate Compound. If this did not work, I would move up to M105. I am confident that the tree sap will have been removed after M105.

                  Mineral spirits?

Is that safe for automotive paint?

I need to qualify my comment above (#8). If neither a tar remover nor solvent nor claybar effectively removes the tar, I think I would call an expert like Tim Lingor or Michael Stoops before I would pull out my polisher. My apologies for offering an unsubstantiated opinion.

Right, I'll try my best to remove them, thanks for the feedback!

Maybe wd-40 or goo-gone. I"m not really sure if I heard they work on tree sap or if they are for other things.
