    Re: I'm completely baffled...

Speaking of damp towel, has anybody already suggested the ice water method of removing residue?

If not, try it. I know that the hardcore boutique wax users always use ice water to remove residue. I cannot be bothered with such method, but it works like a charm from what I heard.

If you really want to go extreme, then:

After wiping your choice of wax off the hood, maybe get a small batch of your favorite car wash together and use the 2 bucket method, gritguards, good washing and drying tools. Then just run your wash mitt over the hood very carefully and wipe away the streaks that way, then proceed to dry the car with a Soft Touch Microfiber Chamois or a good ole Water Magnet.
I rarely have problems with streaking, however I concur with Tuck's advice above. It has previously worked for me.
If the problem continues, you may have an impurity of some sort in the paint. You might try to clean the hood by hand with M80, followed by M3 with a rotary and yellow soft buff, then M16 or NXT 2.0 by hand or Orbital.

There could be many reason and like I said, it happens to be once in a while too. I would suggest after waxing the hood that you complete it first before the rest of the car then come back and wipe it off first which I believe is what you are doing. Then I would use Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Wax or Ultimate Quik Detailer for on the hood as a topper. The UQW or UQD will remove any remaining streaks. Because Meguiar's products work together, this should not effect the bonding or curing process, at least not to a measurable degree that I have ever seen.

Meguiar's recommends not touching the surface with water if possible for at least overnight allowing the LSP to set up properly, then I would use Meguiar's M34 Final Inspection and just do a wipe down if you decided not to use the UQD or UQW the day before.

Like I said, there may be many reasons why it is happening and a person can be doing everything right and it still can happen. I would try the above and I am sure you will be happy.
