    Re: Black car waxing.

Is a microfiber towel good to wash my car with or does everyone recommend lamb wool mitt or sponge? I do own a wash mitt but have no clue what its made of. I know its not lamb wool though.

Most of the towels have a pretty short nap to them. You really want something a little bit longer, whether it is a MF mitt, or sheep, or cotton.

A sort nap for me is about 10 to 15 minutes ...

Yeah.. a beer or two and I nap for a while...

But the length of the fibers is what I meant. A lot of the towels are like a 1/4 inch or so, and tight packed. Having something with longer fibers can help pick up the dirt, without rubbing it on the surface.

What ever mits & toweling you use, be sure it is properly washed in a washing machine *before* use use it the next time.

Never reuse dirty towels & wash mits, or you might introduce new swirls to the finish.

Not that you asked but.... here's my experience with working by hand.

I have a black car, 20 plus years old, that I did by hand using Swirl X. It was a full weekend of hand numbing, back breaking work. It took me the better part of 12 - 15 hours to polish and then wax. I was pleased but not satisfied with the results.

So I bit the bullet and bought a machine. (I got the Flex XC3401)

In a fraction of the time I got such better results that the comparison is not even close.

It even gave me the motivation, and ability, to tackle my wife's Honda van that I would have NEVER attempted by hand.

Without a doubt it is the best money I have ever spent in keeping my cars looking good.

What most people call polishing would be the Cleaning step listed above. As long as yo udo your test spot, and check results, nothing can really go wrong by hand.

It is nice to wait 15 minutes if possible. But nothing will be ruined if you have to start the second coat right away.
This statement made me curious- by 2 coats of wax do you mean wax on- wax off x2, or wax on, wax on again, then wax off??

I agree with what Jeff says. Removing swirls and scratches by hand is really tiresome. I tried removing light scratches by hand and gave up half way because I wasn't getting the results I wanted.

If you really are interested in removing all those swirls you should invest in a Dual Action polisher.

just applying #9 polish, colorX, and NXT by hand took me 4 hours. (not including washing, drying, and claying)

good luck with your stang tho!
