Is there a way to measure the thickness of your paint, or clear coat without expensive tools?

    Re: Paint Thickness "Please help"

There are some cheap pen style paint gauges that can be had for $50, but they are not that accurate.

I would go to a body shop and ask if they would measure your car. They should have a gauge or two lying around.

The gauges that measure each layer (primer, base, and clear) are very expensive. Most affordable gauges measure everything in one shot. Also, the thickness will differ from spot to spot. I use a laser pointer mounted on a tripod to mark where I measured the thickness last.

A moderately decent gauge is going to run about $200. A true high-end model can get towards, and above $1,000.

If you're planning on doing any sort of aggressive process that will likely remove a fair amount of clear coat, it's important to be able to accurately measure film thickness. Since a factory paint job only provides about 2 mils to begin with, an inaccurate gauge could lead to problems and is likely not much better than a wild guess. Wild guesses are not recommended.
