  • Layering inquiry

    Hi,

I guess this may have been asked, however, pardon me if i would ask this again...

I have a dark green colored car with metallic flakes. I would consider it relatively old, but maintained well in a way. I just want to bring out a deeper shine.

First off, my finish would not require something like ultimate compound for prep since there are very minor scratches and swirls only - barely noticeable and light dependent.

I have been looking into layering products to achieve this, I am just not so sure about the order and choice of products.

    1. First would be the cleaner (obviously) after a very good car wash and clay.
    2. This is where the confusion begins..
    • To bring out the deep shine, I plan on using Colorx.
    • For the scratches and swirls, I plan on using Scratchx.
    • Questions now, are (1) which should I use first - Colorx or Scratchx? (2) Should I still use a cleaner after using the previous products?

    3. After the Colorx/Scratchx combo I will top it with tech wax 2.0 paste. 3 Coats max with an interval of 24 hours between each coat.
    4. After the tech wax, i'll be using pure carnauba. Again, 3 coats max.
    5. For every car wash henceforth, I'll be drying with a qd or spray wax.

Has anybody ever tried this combo or am I just exagerrating things? I would like to hear your suggestions and comments about this. However, the main dilemma that I am having lies between the Colorx - Scratchx - Cleaner order.

    Thanks

You don't need to use both ColorX and Scratch X (are you referring to the old Scratch X or Scratch X 2.0?). To use both would be rather redundant. Color X is a mildly aggressive cleaner wax, and Scratch X is a mild paint cleaner. So, pick one or the other. With Color X, you can work it in a little bit, let it dry, and then go back and remove it. With regards to NXT 2.0 and your carnauba, 3 coats of each is definitely overkill. I'd just do one coat of each. At some point, you reach the point of diminishing returns, where each additional layer adds absolutely nothing. If you feel that you absolutely must have that additional coat, I would do one coat of NXT 2.0, followed by 2 coats of carnauba, or two coats of NXT 2.0 and one coat of carnauba. Anything beyond that is a waste of time and product. Are you able to garage the vehicle in between coats? Otherwise you are either going to have to QD or re-wash in order to remove the daily dust. Best of luck to you!

      As mentioned above.

      What's your choice of carnauba?

I have a Benz with that color of paint
I used NXT and topped it with 27
        It came out very nice.

If the majority of your swirls are very fine as you say, you could use ColorX on the majority of the vehicle, with ScratchX to just treat the random deeper scratches. In this case, I would use the ScratchX first.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I have a shaded garage, but at this time of the year its rainy season and environment is really not good, rain, mud, and lots of road grime. Worse is, I can only wash my car during weekends

Currently, all I have is mothers step 3 paste. It's still relatively new so I still have lots to spare from it. For practical reasons, it would be my choice as of now for topping.
