  • Detailing Cart - What Would You Include?

I'm thinking about building a detailing cart to keep supplies, towels, brushes, PC 7424 and pads, and other misc. items all in one place while I work on my vehicles in my garage and driveway while cutting down trips to my current storage shelf.

My thought is to do a completely enclosed base with two deep drawers accessible from the front. The bottom one would be devoted to chemicals. The other would be set up for various sizes and types of MF and WWMF towels. Storage for the PC, case, and pads would also end up somewhere in the base. I haven't decided if I want a shallow drawer on top for applicators, nitrile gloves, and other small miscellaneous items.

One end or the back of the cart would have hooks to store the various brushes I use on tires, wheels, wheelwells, and carpet.

There would be at least one (probably 2 or 3) duplex power receptacle with GFCI protection mounted on the cart to plug my PC, or lights into. I'd look for a way to power the receptacle(s) using a standard extension cord so that I don't have to dedicate one to it and can be flexible between 25' or 50' as needed depending on where I'm working.

Due to their bulk, I'm not interested in keeping my shop vac or buckets on the cart. Same goes for the aluminum Werner work platform I use for working on the roof of my truck and SUV.

The other idea I'd like to incorporate somehow is an adjustable height top tray that would minimize stepping off of the work platform when working on the roofs and upper portion of each vehicle.

With that being said, is there anything you've got on your cart that I'm missing? For towel and applicator storage, would I be better off with a divided drawer for sorting like towels or a wide open drawer with the towels in Rubbermaid or similar boxes? Any other ideas I haven't thought of?

Between my work schedule and a few other things I'm doing this summer and fall, I'm probably looking starting this in the spring so I'm not in a big hurry.

      I have this one...

I've been wanting to modify it a bit. Probably won't have time till this winter.

One of the big things I want is a place to set or maybe hang the polisher while I'm wiping the panel. A place for hanging a few towels would be nice too. I was also thinking about adding some sort of lighting to the cart but don't really want a cord running to it.

Also make sure yours has locking wheels so it doesn't run away on you. Big wheels are better if your driveways isn't smooth too.

Post your ideas when you come up with them too! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I just got one of these retractable extension cords up in my garage. Haven't used it for detailing yet but it seems to work good with the shop vac. I wonder if it would work to mount one right in or on the detailing cart.

What are you thinking of making the cart of out? Steel? Wood?
