  • Tree Sap on Rubber and Plastic Trim - Need Help

I need some help. I parked under a tree last night at a hotel - no choice but to park in that spot. When I came out this morning, my wife's 2004 Ford Escape (white) was covered in what looks and feels like tree sap.

After driving home this afternoon, Smooth Surface Clay worked great on the windows. I'm assuming it will also work on the paint but I won't have time to really work on it until Friday night when I plan to wash and clay it and then go into polishing and waxing on Saturday morning.

My question is, what is a good method for removing the sap from all of the unpainted plastic (dark gray body cladding, bumpers, black mirrors, black door handles, black windshield cowl, etc.) and rubber (wipers, window trim) from the car without damaging those surfaces?

While we're at it what is a good LSP for those same surfaces to maintain color and give it a nice finish without being overly wet and greasy - just a nice simple cleanliness with a matte / low gloss finish?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is an old standby that should solve all of your sap problems...

It is water based, and it tends to leave a matte finish over time.

I presume you've already tried to wash the sap off?

Your BEST bet is to wash it ASAP, preferably with warm soap water. For most fresh light sap droppings this will suffice on removing the sap- especially if the vehicle is waxed. The longer you wait, the harder it gets(literally).

The M40 is also a great product for everything you described as it has LIGHT cleaners and some lasting protection with a matte style finish.

if M40 cannot handle it, then get ahold of some M39.

I've removed small droplets of sap this way many times.

Sometimes, a second wash, right after the first one, can be beneficial.

You poor Escape owners with all of that plastic bodywork. My brother owns one and everytime I look at it I wonder if there's more plastic than metal for bodywork. Whenever you do find a product that works well for the exterior plastic please pass along your thoughts. Thanks!

The Honda Elements are really bad as well for having lots of plastic.

I have an order coming from ADS on Friday. Rick was able to get a bottle of M40 in the box before it shipped.

I love to use the Gold Class Trim detailer available here:http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/produc...?T1=MEG+G10810

Although I think it is cheaper at ADS. The product works great and might be a little easier to find than 40.
