  • Detailing a roof rack?

    Hello Everyone,

I had a question about detailing a roof rack. The car is actually mines, and over the years- my roof rack has taken a beating from UV rays. The plastic now looks dried up and has a weird haze to it.

What would be a good way to restore the plasic parts (if possible) back to it's original color?

I also just purchased a new fairing for the rack and stickered it up with my favorite companies. To avoid future fading/premature aging of the fairing, would it be okay to wax it with NXT 2.0? The fairing itself has a combination of plastic, vinyl, and paper types of stickers. It's not a big deal if these stickers are damage from the wax, I am more concerned about the plastic beneath it.

Here are some photos of what the rack currently looks like:

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions and or links!

    Thanks

    Gold Class Trim Detailer

Innovative technology pioneered by Meguiar’s® to instantly restore color and richness to faded and discolored trim and molding. The trim is protected so well that the "like new" appearance lasts for weeks, not days. Trim Detailer™ also helps remove unwanted contaminants and wax residue. Apply Trim Detailer with our High-Tech Applicator Pad for best results.

Otherwise, I use the easier to apply liquid mirror glaze vinyl and rubber cleaner and conditioner with very good results.

Looks like a job for All Season Dressing to me.

As for the stickers, anything smooth/glossy you can wax.. the paper you will have to just avoid, and hope for the best. be carefull not to catch and pull up the edges.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. One thing I was wondering about the GCTD, I've never actually seen that at my local Walmart. However they do seem to have all the other Gold Class chemicals.

I couldn't find them at Walmart either. However you can try Schucks or pep boys. I think I've seen them there.

Thanks! I will do that tomorrow.

What about waxing the roof rack to help protect it from UV rays?

If the plastic is textured, the wax will just dry white and make a mess.

Using a dressing like Gold Class or ASD will provide UV protection.

ah! glad, I asked before doing.
This would have been an annoying mistake had I done it earlier like I planned.

I like to use All Season Dressing on the roof rack of our Jeep. It lasts a good long time.
