Congratulations on the brand new wheels. That says a lot about the company.

They're sure it wont come off, and that they F'd it up. It's all they need to know. I'm just glad it didn't turn into a whole "thing".

Yeah, seems rather quick of them to buy new wheels when they are unsure about everything...

UPDATE: they are paying for brand new wheels They don't however know what was put on the wheels to cause that type of damage.

The car's 6 months old. A bird turd and I'm reaching for the quick detailer in horror. This nearly gave me a heart attack.

At least insist that they pay for getting the rims re-painted by a person who specializes in such things. Here in Roanoke a re-paint costs about $100 per wheel.

Yeah, I thought it was tire overspray too, but it wont come off. The detailer has no idea, they can't figure it out which is why they are going to look at security tapes.
If they are coated (clear-coat), I would treat them like paint. Use any of Meguiar's cleaners topped with a wax and be done. Polishes for raw metal are too aggressive for coated wheels.

As for what they (or anyone who has cleaned the wheels for that matter) had to do for that to happen, could be what Murr has suggested. That on a hot wheel, it could only be a matter of a minute. Could be too much polishing on top of that. Many things could have caused it IMO.

It could actually be pretty easy, if a cleaner they used wasnt diluted properly.

I hear you brother. But at this point it can't look any worse. If they screw it up more, they're still going to have to replace the rims in my mind. I just can't figure out what the heck would do that to rims. Rims are not dainty things, you would have to put something really bad on there for that to happen. It would have to be so egregious and careless that it's unfathomable to the average human. Like putting toothpaste instead of mustard on your hotdogs. It's that stupid.

I tried both. Started with a microfiber towel, then white light cutting pad and a Porter cable 7424, then a medium orange cutting pad. Nothing, not even a slight improvement. They aren't scratches, the surface is smooth. The shop even went to town on it with a Makita polisher and heavy cut cleaner...nothing.
