  • New Painted Hood Ruined by Waterspots... Need Help in AZ!!!!

I just had my hood and front bumper repainted about a week ago. I brought my car outside while washing my dad's car for father's day yesterday and sprayed my car down to get off some dust, then brought it inside 3 hours later.

I decided to get off the water spots in the garage and to my surprise they won't come off!

I grabbed my clay bar and went at it, no go.

I grabbed some ScatchX 1.0 and go at them, no go. I grabbed my ScratchX 2.0, still nothing. Frustrated I grab Ultimate Compound, AND THEY STILL WON'T GO AWAY.

I'm so infuriated. Previously my hood and bumper had a ton of water spot steins from my old apartment that had the sprinklers run next to my carport at night, but now I park in a garage so I wouldn't have to worry. My hood and bumper also had a ton of rock chips, and I burnt the clearcoat while wet sanding. So I JUST HAD IT REPAINTED and was going to keep it SPOTLESS!

Yesterday I detailed my father's car from 7 AM to 10 PM at night the entire day. I didn't plan to do my car and then this **** happens, all because I sprayed my car down with water and left it in the sun for a few hours. The rest of the car doesn't have waterspot marks only the freshly painted hood and bumper!!!!

I just bought the G110 DA, but I can't get it to remove the spots either...

Someone please help me... I'm so broke and in debt now, this was supposed to be a good day...

Well your going to have to remove more CC.
Sounds like it's fresh paint without any protection on it?
I'm thinking the water etched into the paint and you'll just have to work it more.
More will chime in, don't worry, we'll help you through this crisis.

The paint shop said they baked the paint onto the surface, I thought it would be harder.

The only "protection" the paint had was a coating of M07 I put on the day I got my car back, so nothing really. I didn't want to wax it since the paint is new.

I just can't believe that a few hours did this!!! I kept thinking to myself while I was working on my dad's car that "yeah the water is bad but just a few hours can't hurt, you need to finish your dad's car for father's day first before you do your car..."

You're probably right about removing more clearcoat but how can I do it in a more isolated manner? It would **** to have to remove so much clear coat right after a new paint job. Luckily the shop put on 3 layers, but even then, I was hoping to have 3 layers of protection for the next few years, and not have to wear it down to 1 layer a week later...

Unless you sand it you should be ok.
Do a test spot and see how much it's going to take to remove them.
Tap water contains minerals and sounds like your has a lot of them.
        Any pics?

Hi,I hit this thread a few mins. ago. Sorry to hear what happened. Normally a car should be left dry for a day.Last time i had mine painted,i left it in the shop overnight because it was raining.

I think all you can do is work at it more, like Mario says.I think the sun did most of the damage here, what with the minerals in your water aswell.

I'll be able to use a camera tomorrow. I'll try to get some pics.

I used water from the house water softener. I connected the wash hose to the unit directly that goes to the house, I thought that would be better...

Also Eddie, this was about a week later, I thought that would be have been enough time

Xantonin Check this thread out on How to Remove Water Spots

Lots of great information that should set you right on your way.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

              I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
              Remove swirls my friends.

Re: New Painted Hood Ruined by Waterspots... Need Help in AZ!!!!

I've read that thread before. I'm actually very will self-informed I've read a lot of topics here, but this is all just very frustrating.

I thought the water spots were only Type 1 marks, and the ones everywhere else on my car were, I was able to remove them. But the other ones aren't! I was so disappointed the clay bar didn't remove them because I knew what it meant...

If water can cause such damage in such short time, why can't I remove it so easily with ScratchX 1.0?? I hate that I need to resort to Ultimate Compound, unless I'm doing this wrong.

                  I have at my disposal:

                  G110, ScratchX 1.0, M205, SwirlX, ScratchX 2.0, Ultimate Compound
                  M07

Not sure on the best method to finish this. I think M205 after Ultimate Compound might be my best bet.

It's been a week, and the paint shop did say the paint was baked on, should I wax it if I'm ever able to remove the water marks?

I'm going to go back to the garage and use a hand foam pad and some more UC....

Hi Xan,I think you might want to go back to the garage first, before going any further. It has obviously etched your fresh paint.

After baking, then a week,it should've been fine, but I think the sun had a bit to play here. You said the water is low in minerals?

There are chemically based options for attempting to remove, or at least significantly diminish water spots that do not remove paint or clear coat.

They are usually fairly expensive, however, a mix of 50/50 distilled water and white vinegar is extremely cheap. I would suggest starting with a water/vinegar solution and a microfiber. Dampen the microfiber with the solution and let it rest on the water spots in a cool/shaded location for a few minutes. Then wipe it away and inspect the paint.

Some branded water-spot removal specific solutions are quite specific as to the type of water spots they treat, too. Do some searching around Google for more detailed information on them. I suggest this because it goes hand in hand with the idea of using "the least aggressive method to get the job done."

I don't understand. How could water and vinegar remove a Type II water etching that a clay bar couldn't remove?

I'm totally up for tying it at this point but I don't understand.

It is possible that there is a combination of deposits and damaged paint from the water spots and using a chemical removal method will remove the deposits without removing paint. Water spots come in all shapes, sizes, depths, and make-ups, so sometimes you need to use a few methods to get the best results.

Since fairly aggressive sanding and polishing has not worked, I'm simply suggesting attacking it from a different angle. Also consider that it is possible that the acid worked it's way down into the paint, etching as it went, and then the deposits settled deep down in the paint. Now, they may be exposed and something chemical based may have a decent chance at working on them where as before they may not have been able to penetrate properly.

Bottom line, your options are :continue to remove precious paint, or try a chemical based product that will not remove something that can not be replaced. I am simply suggesting giving it a try, as what do you have to lose...maybe 10 minutes of your time and 25 cents worth of water and vinegar? Sounds like it is at least worth a shot, right?

No luck... not sure if I didn't let it sit long enough or what.

I'll try microwaving the water to make it hotter than let it sit for half an hour.

My theory is that my car got really hot in the sun (I think someone showed that a black car could get to over 160 F?) so if I heat up the MF and vinegar to boiling hot it may work better
