  • Some G110 and pad questions,

Now that I have purchased a G110 from ADS, I have a couple of questions regarding how to use it and I also have some questions regarding the pads that come with it.

first off, Will the backing plate that comes with the machine be fine, or is there something else that is better, or more appropriate with the polishing and finishing pads?

I understand these new Soft Buff 2.0 pads that come with it are machine washable, so do you guys squeeze excess product out with dish soap first then just throw them in the washer?, just like that?

do you dedicate one product per pad?

    How do you dry them?

and last but not least, should I order at least four more polishing pads and two or three more finishing pads?

sorry for asking really dumb questions too, since I am sure they have been anwsered a million times.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

Did it come with the yellow and black plate? The standard G110 plate is the W67, which does work with the Soft Buff 2.0 pads.

In order to get the most out of the DA and the Soft Buff 2.0 pads, you really do need the larger W68DA plate. It provides total support for the pad and increases the cut.

I never soak my pads with dish soap. The only thing I use is car wash soap. Pads are not cheap and the dish soap is not good for the foam.

Yes, one pad for each product.

I set mine out and left them air dry. When in a pinch, I have pressed them into a microfiber (never cotton terry) to soak up some of the water.

The number of pads depends on the size and number of vehicles that you will be working on.

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

Here's an excerpt from one of my responses to someone asking about different pads/products to use with his G110. Not all relevant but some good info here:

As for pads, you are using the Meguiar's 7" pads...the least able to remove defects by size. By that I mean let's say you have a foam compound that is equal in mechanical abrasiveness. As you move down in size with an orbital polisher you will gain defect-removal power. So a 6.5" pad would do more and a 5.5" even more and the 4" would remove the most. Since the G110 accepts the same backing plates as a PC7424 you can pick up a different plate and utilize any size you like...again improving your polisher's performance.

Aside from pad size, switching away from the Meguiar's polishing pad allows you to either move up to Meguiar's Burgundy Cutting Pad or Meguiar's SOLO Wool pads (if you don't want to move out of the Meg's line) or go with any of the Lake Country CCS lineup that is more aggressive than your current pad such as the CCS Yellow, CCS Orange, or PFW (purple foam wool).
As for your other questions, here goes...

do you dedicate one product per pad?
I don't necessarily do so over my entire collection but do so over a particular job. Usually done in stages, I'll go over a car with M105/CCS Orange pad, for example, and use this combo exclusively. When I move to M205 I'll switch to a CCS Green or CCS White. Some jobs require another pass with the CCS Orange and a different product so I'll grab fresh ones...never cross-contaminate your pads. After washing them you can use them with anything you like.

      How do you dry them?
After washing them, I will squeeze them to wring out all possible water (like a sandwich or taco...not twisting) and then place them face down on a towel to dry so that the water runs away from the backing plate. When I come back to them overnight I'll put them away or if they have any residual moisture I'll either set them in the dryer on "air dry" or "tumble low" for 15 to 20 minutes never allowing them to get too hot and potentially damage the velcro backing.

and last but not least, should I order at least four more polishing pads and two or three more finishing pads?
Don't know how many came in your kit but I would consider 3 to 4 pads of each type a minimum to do a car. With that in mind I'd have at least two full cars worth of pads in case you have more than one job a day, cannot wait for them to dry (back to back jobs), or damage/lose/cross contaminate the ones you are using. You really cannot have too many pads...

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

        thanks for the responses guys,

        the kit comes with:

        - Meguiar's G110 Polisher with 1-year factory warranty
        - One Meguiar's W67DA Velcro backing plate
        - Two Meguiar's W8207 Foam Polishing Pad
        - One Meguiar's W9207 Foam Finishing Pad
        - 3-Pack of Meguiar's Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels
        - One FREE Meguiar's Duffle Bag!
        - One FREE Meguiar's M20512 Ultra Finishing Polish

they are the 7" pads and they are the 2.0 version

so washing the pads with car wash soap then putting them in the washing machine sounds good?

as for the drying, I dont want to remove the velcro by putting them in the dryer so i am going to let them air dry and squeeze some water out with a microfiber, sound good?

obviously I am new to the G110 so any more info on the pads and how to take car of them properly/ do's and dont's are greatly appreciatted

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

Pick up a few extra finishing and polishing pads. Honestly, you can never have too many pads. Make sure to get the 2.0 backing plate, it will just make life a lot easier. Washing with car soap then washing machine will work, and air drying is the best method to use causing the least wear after a wash.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

          I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
          Remove swirls my friends.

Will the backing plate that comes with the kit give me any trouble, or is the 2.0 backing plate just better?

The 2.0 pad is larger and more evenly applies support and pressure across the pad surface and was specifically designed for the 2.0 pads. Pick one up from Rick at ADS and he throws in a free 2.0 pad of your choice...

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

With as many cars as you have scheduled this summer, maybe you should consider buying pads by the case. Rick (ADS) allows you to vary the selection. I think the best course of planning is a 3:1 (polishing pad to finishing pad) ratio. You really won't need that many cutting pads so it might be best to have 2 or 3 total given the number of cars you have left to detail from your bug client.

And yes, the W68DA is a sweet BP. Definitely pick one up if funds permit.

thanks for all the help guys,

in the next coming weeks I will probably order the 2.0 plate and additional polishing and finishing pads,

But will the backing plate that comes with the G110 in my kit still work okay, I understand the W68DA backing plate is better and designed for the 2.0 pads.

But will I still get pretty good results with the backing pate that comes with it?

Re: Some G110 and pad questions,

Tuck it will work, but it is worth the price in getting the newer backing plate. It just allows for more even pressure and there aren't any centering issues.

As previously stated, you have a big line-up this summer so go ahead and get a lot of pads and the 2.0 backing plate!
