  • Some Interesting Observations

I was just playing around with all of the new products (UC, Swirl-X, 205, 105) on a car in my family that has very sensitive black paint, I'm just testing everything out to dial in a process for a full buff job, as it has the usual swirls after 6 months of every day use. As I was using all these new products I made some very interesting observations. The first thing that perplexed me was when I used ultimate compound both with the PC and by hand with a foam applicator pad. When I used UC by hand with a foam applicator the finish turned a bit hazy, and side by side the section with the PC & 8006 pad, speed 5 for a miniute was almost crystal clear. That really made me scratch my head. The same thing happened with swirl-x and 205, just not nearly as pronounced. After trying many different things, I found I got a crystal clear finish by hand as long as I REALLY lessened up on the pressure. My conclusion is that these new products are very sensitive to pressure. I assume the reason the UC was giving me a crystal clear finish with the PC is due to the fact the pounds per square inch of pressure exerted on the paint was no where near what I was exerting by hand with the foam pad. The clearest finish I could obtain was with 205 with a finishing pad on the PC, and really light light pressure- or 205 & or swirl x by hand with a foam pad and very very light pressure, and you can rub as vigorous as you want, just as long as you don't push down very hard.

Well there are more factors at play here than just pressure/techniques
But your on the right path to "detailing enlightenment"

You said it yourself, the paint you were working on was very sensitive and that most likely has as much, or more, to do with what you're seeing. We've recently had a couple of Honda Fit models come through our garage, both black, and the paint was super sensitive. We found our best results came from using either PRC or M66 with a finishing pad on the G110 at slower than normal speeds and with lighter than normal pressure. ScratchX by hand didn't leave a very nice finish, nor did many other products.

Late last year I had the opportunity to work on a 1981 Ferrari 512BBi with original single stage black paint and it was beyond finicky. Everything by hand (ScratchX, M80, M66, even M07) left the paint looking very cloudy. We eventually settled on a light approach with M80 on the G110 and even then it didn't come up to snuff until we put a nice, thin coat of NXT 2.0 on it.

Honestly, I don't know what's more challenging/frustrating - working on rock hard paint or paint that is so delicate it shows marring at the slightest touch.

Yes the paint on this vehicle certainly is sensitive to hazing and marring. I just thought it was really amazing how the DA with ultimate compound at speed five left a much nicer looking finish then rubbing it out by hand with the UC and foam pad.

I used all the new products on my silver 1999 bmw and they did an awesome job, no marring or hazing whatsoever
