  • Using a machine buffer; what to tape off?

I'm thinking of buying the DA, and using SwirlX then some #7 polish to touch up my paint. Then finish with some Gold Class Wax. I imagine I'll need 2 polishing pads, one finishing pad and those bonnet things for wax removal.

Anyway that aside, it's probably a good idea to tape things off right? Are there any guides or recommendations or tips on what to tape off or is it just sort of common sense things?

I've seen people tape off the gaps between panels, not sure if that's only recommended for certain buffing stages or what.... I don't really think that's a good idea because then you'll have some unpolished parts on the panel!

    Thanks

Edit: I've already read enough about the DA techniques, so that's not an issue please don't post links for how to use it. Just a tape question!

I don't tape often, but when I do....

I usually tape off the black trim around the windows. My outer mirrors are black so I run some tape around them on the edge. If your using a rotary, I've seen some tape off the seams to not get splatter in the seams....

Basically tape off what you don't want product on....

Here is a link to a thread Tim Lingor did and he showed how he taped off a Ford F250. Bout the 5-6th photo down.

    Hope that helps a smidge.

Haha, yeah I didn't think it was too complicated. I guess a better way of asking this should have been...

For what product do I need to tape things off?

For example, if I'm polishing I don't think I'd need to tape off things. But for paint cleaning it's probably a good idea so the abrasives don't rub off the rubber or something eh? Maybe not? Always good idea to tape?

I read a topic where Mike suggested covering the front air vents so polish doesn't get in there, that's a good idea.

By the way, yes that did help, thanks!

For everything. When polishing or waxing you should always tape off if you are using a machine.

Don“t want any splatter on the gasps and unwanted areas.

The time it takes to tape off the vehicle is a lot less in the long run when it comes to cleaning all the nooks and cranies from product splatter.
