    All of the above.

Not spinning no matter the pressure you put on the pad.

I clean on the fly after every other application or more then switch pads if too heavy. I try to have at least 3 pads for my car, more is better.

Like Aaron posted, the first visual sign is the pad stops rotating, or doesn't rotate very well.

Mark your backing plate or the back of your buffing pad or both with a permanent marker and this will make it easy to see if the pad is rotating or just vibrating.

With most backing plates you can use a black permanent marker to place a few lines on the backing plate itself plus the outer edges of the back of the foam buffing pad. This will make it easier to see if the pad is rotating or just vibrating against the paint.

W-8006 Foam Polishing Pad with black marks to indicate when the pad is rotating.

With our new W68DA Backing Plate, because the backing plate is all black it can be hard to see an ink mark on the rubber backing plate so simply mark the outer edges of your foam pad.

W-8207 Foam Polishing Pad with black marks to indicate when the pad is rotating.

It's not as big an issue to mark a finishing pad because it's not as important that a finishing pad is rotating since in most cases you're not using a finishing pad to remove paint but to spread out a coating of wax.

If you are using a finishing pad to remove light swirls then do mark the backing plate and back of the foam pad and if by chance you're using our black W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 Finishing pad then you might have to use a White Crayon, White Fingernail Polish, White Touch-up Paint, or some other method of creating a white or light colored reference on the back of the backing plate to see when it's rotating or simply vibrating.

In this picture we marked both the back of a cutting pad and the backing plate.

            No.

It happens to ANY pad used with a tool that oscillates. That would include tools like the Porter Cable unit, the UDM and even the Flex XC3401

            Think about it...

If you place some product on the face of the pad like this,

Then if you place the face of your foam pad against the surface of the paint before you turn it on....

For that moment of time between when you place the face of the foam pad into contact with the paint but before you turn it on, where do you think the liquid product is going?

(Regardless of which tool you're using or which companies foam pads you're using)

            Tick, tick, tick....
