  • Supreme Shine MF - Confused!

First off, let me state that I would estimate I've read 90% of the posts regarding the techniques and methods of cleaning microfiber towels. So far I've used either liquid tide or chemical guys microfiber rejuvinator cleaning concentrate.
The source of my confusion is this: I have a rubbermaid tote full of supreme shine microfibers, some which are the "older" style with the satin edging, and some are brand new ones that I just purchased. What I'm finding is that depending on the towel I grab, some are better at absorbing liquid better than others. For example, I find I have to use two towels, one in each hand to dry a panel. The first towel kind of smears the water around, and the second towel pulls the streaked water off the surface leaving it dry. Sometimes it takes a third towel if the first two don't pick the water up. What really surprised me when I washed the truck tonight was when I grabbed one of the new SS which was fresh out of the package but had been washed once with Tide was that it had so much "bite" it wouldn't slide across the surface of my truck. I should also state that I'm not yet using the "flood" method of rinsing - when I start to dry a panel it tends to have quite a bit of water on it (especially the hood and roof)
Is it possible that there is that much difference between the old towels and the new? Could it also be possible that I've somehow contaminated the old SS's with the satin edging?

this just goes to show how effective the sheeting method is. The water is gonna collect most on the hood and roof but some of the water on the side body panels may slide down.

sounds like your Supreme Shines are fine, a microfiber is going to absorb a lot of the water and there will be a point in time when it gets too much water and it is no longer dryin the car.

use the sheeting method and this will make life a whole lot easier

First, the Supreme Shine isnt really meant to absorb water.

I wash mine with some wite venegar tossed in every once in a while, people say it is a bit of a rejuvinator.

Actually, I understand what the OP is stating. I too have had the same problem. I believe that it has a lot to do with the detergent that is being used and how much detergent is used. If the detergent is not rinsed out completely in the rinse cycle, I believe the remaining detergent residue will affect the performance of the MF towel in terms of absorption.

I have found that putting a cup or two of white vinegar in the rinse will improve the situation. Otherwise, you just keep going over the affected area that is smearing over and over until the area is dry. I do not have a problem with streaking.

yeah like murr said I wouldnt use them for drying your car. You should probably look into some specified drying towels for that. Other than that you should be good

Something like a couple of Water Magnets and the sheeting method will solve all your drying problems, or a Soft Touch Microfiber chamois.

I am having the same issue with all of my towels. They are starting to absorb less and less. And they aren't removing product as well as they did. It's not the towels fault. It's the # of washes, the detergent, and what is on other towels when you put them in the wash...

The next time you wash your towels. Add some vinegar in the rinse cycle. Then rinse them a couple of times.

For drying: get yourself some water magnets.

If you find that your towels are starting to absorb less and less, and if the vinegar trick doesn't work to correct this problem, then try boiling them in water for 5-10 minutes. This will hopefully cause the towels to release whatever chemicals and junk they have absorbed and restore their capillary action. (Bence shared this tip with the MOL brethren a couple of years ago. How much vineger do you add to the wash load? I wash my MF's in the "small" mode with warm water. Doesn't the vineger stink everything up?

I wash my towels on the hot water setting. I add approximately a tablespoon per towel at the beginning of the rinse cycle (cold water). I then run a second rinse cycle (no vinegar).

No odor at all, or very little.

Tuck this is definitely on my list once I find some decent hose fittings that will allow me to quickly disconnect my hoze nozzle

Now I'm really confused! I thought the supreme shine was a good drying towel.

I have three water magnets but after my last truck (black) and the quality scratches and swirls I installed in that paint I'm very hesitant with my new truck because I feel that I've gotten a "free pass"

Even when I used my WM, they still left large streaks of "open water" on the surfaces of my truck. The only way I can get the surface "dry" is to use the SSs.

Cool. Now I know when to actually add the vinegar

Oh well, I guess that's why I read the forums, to learn from the pros

Have you tried one of these yet?

                            X2070 Soft Touch Microfiber Chamois

Very soft, very absorbent, easy to wring out. Use this to get most of the water off the car and then blot off any remaining small droplets or wipe the car down with UQD or UQW

Because they wring out easy you can quickly remove most of the water using just one of these but two are nice to have.

I forgot to add that a waffle-weave microfiber towel won't necessarily solve all one's drying problems. It depends on the towel. I recently bought a California drying towel from ADS and it simply refuses to absorb water. It just streaks. Very curious--and disappointing. Perhaps mine is the exception, however. Does anyone else have any experience with the California Drying Towel?
