  • Rock chips repair?

I'm getting ready to do my final detailing with the following steps.
    Claying
    Color x
    Sealant.
Now, I have some very tiny rock chips on the hood, Can I repair those with the pen touch up paint after claying, then finish up with the polishing and sealing?
Also, after the color x, how long should I wait before I put the #21 sealant? thanks

The other week ago there was a gentleman hired to take care of some rock chips on one of the Meguiar's Tahoe's and I watched as he used the Dr. Color Chip system and all I can say is it was amazing how fast and easy it was for him to make all the rock chips completely disappear. No blobs, no sanding and buffing.

    Dr. Color Chip

Might want to check into this system.

As to which order to work, that is apply the touch-up paint first or after the paint is cleaned, polished and waxed?

It's kind of a conundrum, if you clean the rock chips first and then fill them, you risk removing the touch-up paint during the claying, cleaning, polishing and waxing steps...

If you wait to fill them after you've cleaned, polished and waxed the paint then you have to go back and somehow clean the chipped areas again to remove any of the paint care products used on it.

Probably the best way is to clean the chipped areas as well as you can and then apply the touch-up paint and then after you've applied it let it dry for a week or two so it can fully harden and dry to your car.

Then just be careful when doing the paint correction work. If you remove any touch-up paint in your process go back and fix it after the fact.

Touch-up paint work is difficult at best, that's why you don't see most detailers offering it as a service,

    It's hard to do
    It takes time
Most customers won't pay what a person would charge if they offered the service
Most customers expectations for the results exceed what most detailers achieve under the time restrictions they have to work with.

The Dr. Color Chip system I witnessed was very impressive.

You can apply the M21 after you wipe off the ColorX. Basically you're using the ColorX as your paint cleaner and just by the way, it's also leaving some wax behind. After you remove the dried ColorX, reorganize yourself, get a clean applicator pad and now lay down a thin coating of the M21. Work it in and over the paint really well usually using overlapping, circular motions. Allow it to fully dry before removing and then use a clean microfiber to remove.

I just suffered some nasty impact chips to my rear bumper cover after light contact with a textured wall last Sunday. I think this product might be a good alternative to the $300 Bumper Docs wanted to sand and repaint my bumper cover. Whaddya think, Mario?

Thanks for the detailed intructions, I will get on with the project.
I will be doing this on an 07 truck which the paint still pretty good. Is the color x still recommended? I just red the label and it's best for restoring and oxidized paint.

I just sent an e-mail to Dr Color Chip asking for a group discount code for MOL after noticing they provided one for members at a BMW forum a few years back. Be nice to get a promotional 10% off for trying their system!

I'll start up a fresh thread to see if we can scare up 10 or more MOLers interested in Dr Color Chip.
