  • Polishing help/questions

So i've used my g110 on a 2006 civic and a 2005 corolla. I've gotten okay swirl removal using Scratch-X 2.0 with 6.5" white polishing pad. Not all swirls were removed. I thought Honda paint was supposed to be soft and swirls easily removed?

Same story with the corolla but I used Ultimate compound and 5.5" orange light cutting pad. I barely got any results removing light swirls. Again, i thought japanese paint was supposed to be soft?

I believe i am using the g110 correctly. 15-20 lbs pressure. Making sure its still spinning by using the black marks i put on the backing plate. Slow, overlapping, criss-cross movement... even went diagonal on a couple of sections.

All paint is different, even on the same kind of car
Never assume what the paint will do
You must do a test pass to figurer out what your working with

Like Mario said, not all paints are the same given the car manufacturer. In one of the Meguiars Saturday classes, it was explained that automakers may have different paint suppliers based upon the location of their assembly plants. So say that GM in Mexico buys their paint from a regional supplier, and that paint cures to a greater degree of hardness than the GM plant in Canada for possibly the same make or model.

I just polished the hood of my 1993 Civic and had to knock off after spending 3.5 hours trying to get the swirls and scratches out with M105 (DA applied with a polishing pad). Despite Honda's reputation for soft paints, I found the paint defects on my car incredibly resistant to correction. Since this is my detailing-practice car, perfection was not really my goal but rather for establishing my technique. In spite of that, I was subliminally challenged to try to remove all the defects despite knowing that some of those defects were nearly as old as the paint!
