  • Best way to eliminate surface rust in rock chips?

I'd like to touch up a couple of rock chips that has a little bit of surface rust in them before polishing and waxing on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. The chips have been there a couple of years and have never gotten more than a light surface coating of rust, nor gotten worse. (no growth or bubbling, etc). smaller than a pencil eraser.

What's the best way you folks would deal with this? In the past I've just applied the touch-up paint over it, sealing it (cutting off the oxygen/water combo) and has been fine on other cars but I feel there is a better way perhaps.

are you familiar with wet sanding?

I have never done it but want to look into trying it out.

From what I have been told, clean the area out real good and apply your touch up paint and let it cure for a good two solid weeks to make sure it is rock hard. Then wet sand down the area and a little of the surrounding area, and then you can buff out the area and polish it to get out the wet sanding scratches and it should look really good. Than wax or sealant.

I am sure there is may be a few more steps involved but that is the basic idea.

I am thinking about getting a junk hood or panel to try it out on to perfect the process first.

Im sure others will chime in. There are some links and threads on here I am sure that have addressed this in more detail
