  • My MR2 is ugly... Please help.

    Hi

I'm new to the forums but not Meguiar's polishing products, I love them.

So the reason I've posted of your forums is because I've recently bought a MR2 1991 with 68,000 miles, the owner kept it in the garage and rarely drove it.

I went home to wash it and I wish I hadn't because this was under his pretty wax job

After seeing this, I guess I'm going to have to enter foreign territory, I've never have tried to get rid of (I pretty sure this is oxidation because I can remove it with my greasy finger)oxidation and bad swirls like this, I've only just polished and waxed my cars with Meguiars.

My car is just covered with this oxidation, I want to get rid of it first and then the swirls. I've seen the 5-step care cycle and read through it, very imformative, but was wondering about oxidation...how do you go about getting rid of that horrible look?

    Thanks

I think Ultimate Compound would be the best starting point for this project. Looks like you have fairly severe oxidation and swirls.

Do you want to do this by hand? Or are you open to buying a polisher like the Meguiar's G110 and taking a little work out of the equation?

That looks like single stage. That should clean up easily with dramatic results.

Where in California are you? Is Mike still looking for an extreme makeover car with oxidized paint? If so maybe yours could qualify?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

^^^ My thinking exactly. I'll bet this would make for an excellent teaching car. Maybe you can bring it over to Megs for an extreme makeover. I'd love to see the results.

If I were doing it myself rather than taking it over to see Megs, I'd get a machine polisher like the PC 7424 or G110.

I just read the description of the Ultimate Compound, that one bottle is all i need to get rid of the oxidation and scratchs? If so, WOW.

I have a WEN sander polisher, that i've had for awhile, if that shouldn't be used, then i'll probably use my hand. I saw that sexy G110, but unforunately I have insignificant fund.

I live near Sacramento, I see that Mike Phillips lives in Apple Valley, so I guess I couldn't be qualified, but a extreme makeover does sound exciting.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Yes Ultimate Compound should be all you need. That stuff is awesome but, you'll need to wax it too.
What kinda of polisher do you have?

Pretty sure that is just an orbital polisher which is really only good for spreading wax.

I would do it by hand with a softbuff foam applicator. I would also get a bottle of SwirlX to follow after the Ultimate Compound in case you leave some light marring behind (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't).

As always, start by taping off a small area (2x2 or so) and doing the complete process from Ultimate Compound all the way to your final step (NXT 2.0?). Then you can tell if the process is working before you spend a day doing the entire car only to see it wasn't the right combination or technique.

                        yea, that's an orbital
and always do a test spot like Mark said

That ss paint is very soft. Correction is a breeze. I'd not step up to Ultimate Compound without trying something like 205 or ScratchX 2.0 first. I seldom need anything very abrasive on mine. The oxidation is a nuisance as the paint is nearing the end of it's life but I kept mine in great condition by using #80 followed by #7 and then a good wax or sealant every couple months. A car cover helps slow the oxidation a lot as does a garage.

Not all paint is equal (I think this is a lost proverb)
Even on the Assembly line they can change the paint from car to car
                            Hope it is easy though.

I would also suggest a step 4.5 of Color X. I think that the Ultimate Compound will really bring color back to your paint and remove oxidation, but the Color X will probably bring a little more out that will make your car look amazing after you have topped it with NXT 2.0
