  • Wet Sanding & Scratches

My car has some scratches that have actually removed paint, where My fingernail can get caught. Can I wetsand the scratched area then using my DA and a Polish to remove it? I have touchup paint as well. Can this be done, or is it Rotary only?

Regardless of how you remove the sanding marks, if this is factory paint then removing enough paint to remove the scratch(s) will either put you into the color coat and put you so close that the paint would only be whisper thin in this area.

    Is this a daily driver?

There is members who have removed sanding marks with a DA and 105 and then there are people who argue saying it cant be done. Ive wetsanded a small scratch with some 3000grit and removed it. It took 3-4 passes to remove it. I still went over it with a rotary however because I still found light sanding marks afterwards.

Hey Mike, Yes it's a Daily Driver. It's a 2002 Lexus to be specific. I know they use more clear coat than lesser quality companies, but my Mom put about an 8 in scratch on the front bumper....

I was on another forum somewhere, don't remember where and someone posted that I said sanding marks cannot be taken out with a DA Polisher.

That's actually incorrect, what I usually write on this forum is that Meguiar's does not have an official recommendation or process stating how to remove sanding marks using a DA Polisher. We know it can be done but we do not have an official recommendation or process.

We do have official recommendations and processes for removing sanding marks using a rotary buffer as this is the best tool for the job.

A DA Polisher can be used to remove sanding marks, take my word for it Meguiar's has been in the business longer than most and making buffing pads for DA Polishers longer than anyone else in the business. Meguiar's completely knows what a DA Polisher is capable of using the right pads and chemicals but doesn't mean this is something the average person can do successfully and easily.

There's also a huge difference between removing the sanding marks to a small area and sanding down and entire car with the goal of removing the sanding marks using a DA Polisher. When it comes to sanding down an entire car the best tool for the job if your goal is 100% removal of all the sanding marks in the most time-efficient way is by using a rotary buffer.

Other tools can do the job, but it's going to take longer for a process that already takes a long time.

For small areas it can be done and finishing with the highest grit paper will help a lot and using a smaller size buffing pad over what Meguiar's offers will insure you can keep the pad rotating better under pressure.

Again, we don't have an official recommendation for products and process when it comes to using a DA Polisher to remove sanding marks but M105 would be a good product for such a process.

Hey Mike, thanks for the help. Maybe I will do some test spot sanding on my honda which I don't care as much about.

            Thanks
