  • Wax removal from window weatherstrip

Hi all. Have a 1940 Plymouth Deluxe P 10. All new side window weatherstrip installed. Car has recently been restored and clear coat buffed. What is the best way to remove the dried buffing compound from the weatherstrip without harming the clear coat?
Thanks for your time and input.

    Hi Carl:

The best Meguiar's product for this is M39 Heavy-Duty Vinyl Cleaner.

Getting compound out of some rubber/plastic can be difficult; multiple applications maybe required. Sometimes using a soft brush will help.

That is what I have used; never had any paint problem with it.

If you want you can protect the area around were you are working with some towels.

If Meguiar's compounds were used they are water soluble so this feature helps because soap and water will dissolve the residue, that said once any type of polish, wax or compound residue embedded itself onto rubber and plastic trim even if the product is water soluble it's still going to be hard to remove because it tends to stick really well after it dries hard.

Usually you'll need to scrub it a little either with some kind of nylon bristle brush like a stiff toothbrush or with a piece of terry cloth. Just don't rub the paint at the same time.

This is why a lot of people will take the extra step to tape these areas off with painter's tape to avoid the entire problem in the first place, sorry to say body shops while they may have the greatest painter in the world, he usually doesn't do the wet-sanding, cutting and buffing and the guy that does this kind of production work at body shops doesn't usually have the incentive or mindset to tape off the trim on your beautiful car to avoid the entire problem in the first place. Just a guess but been there, done that and always tape off trim before compounding to protect the rubber and plastic and as a service to the owner of the car.

M3916 Vinyl Cleaner is an effective product for removing product residue off trim so maybe visit your local PBE store and purchase a bottle. If they don't have it in stock they can order it for you.

I just used APC to remove wax residue on my sunroof weatherstipping, worked great.
