  • 2005 Jetta GLI first time wax job....

    Hello to everyone,

I'll be the first time waxing the car. I've searched and still confused with so many product out there...

We wash it about once a week some time longer. But I would like to wax it. I've never used a power tool to wax before, only done it by hand.

Could you guys recommend which products to use? Which order to use them in? If using a power tool would give me the best results, I'll give that a try.

It has some small scratches, would like to remove them.

The car is all black. All body parts, molding, bumpers, door handles are painted black.

The trim is chrome. Do I have to protect them? If so, how? I hope if wax gets on them I could just wipe it off.

Any input, links, sites would be great.

    Thanks...
    Joe

      Thanks for the warm welcome...

Sound easy. After wash, only a 2 step process. Will I still get a good shine by hand? Or, would you recommend a power tool?

      Thanks

Just posted the below comments to this thread but the advice is the same,

New 2009 GTI, Black Magic in color (metallic black). I am strongly considering ordering the Meguiar's DA polisher. I am trying to follow the 5 step process, but am unsure about which products may be best Wash - already have product Clean - car has light swirls and a couple of very light, yet long scratches (old wash mitt,

If you really want to keep your car's finish looking show room new swirl-free then you really need to get a DA Polisher like our G110

The human hand just cannot produce the same results a DA Polisher can due to even pressure over a buffing pad when applying products and unlike the human it never gets tired. You never really know how aggressive a product you'll need to remove swirls and scratches out of each different car you work on because the polishability, that is the hardness or softness of different paint systems vary to greatly.

        Meguiar's teaches the philosophy of,

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"

By doing this you can dial in a procedure that meets your expectations while leaving the most paint on the car.

In keeping with this practice, it would be appropriate to start with SwirlX on one of our yellow foam polishing pads on the G110 on the 5.0 Speed Setting. You would have to get the different product and then do a test spot on your car and inspect the results and based upon your inspection you could continue with this process or substitute a more aggressive product if your first product of choice isn't getting the defects out effectively or quickly enough.

Beside removing defects you want to really dial-in your washing and drying process as anything that touches the paint has the potential to instill swirls and scratches if it's not a quality product to start with.

Using machine that look like these are good for spreading wax over the surface but they are not good for removing swirls.

Machine Photos - DA Polishers - Rotary Buffers - Traditional Orbital Buffers

        Sealy Orbital Polisher

        WEN Orbital Polisher

        Vector Orbital Polisher

So you pretty much need to get a G110 Dual Action Polisher and the right pads and chemicals or you need to to figure on doing any correction work by hand.

You can get a great looking finish with two product applied by hand, it's just removing swirls and scratches is best done and more easily done with a machine. Black cars show swirls and scratches to your eyes a lot better than other colors and clear coats can be a little tricky to get to a show car shine and keep them that way if they're a daily driver.

If you have other cars you want to detail such as a spouse or friends, I would go for the Meguiars G110/Dual Action Polisher.
If you did buy that, buy
              4 Polishing Pads
              1 Finish Pad
              M105, M205, M80, M83 and NXT Tech Wax 2.0.
              Good Luck.

G110 is a must if you plan to do swirl removal over the entire car. It can be done by hand, but it is exhausting and slow (by hand).

I gave my opinion to another new member here http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30416 and I'd give you the same advice.

This is great place to learn because there is a lot of mythological information in the world of automotive detailing. The Meg's guys will really put you on the right path.

                      Welcome to MOL
As far as power tools the PC, G110 or the Flex would be the way to go for swirl removal. I still almost always wax by hand

After some searching, I'm planning on going with the 5 step process. Which over the counter...off of the store shelf products would you recommend?

                          Step 1 Wash (NTX Wash)
Step 2 Clean (Clay and Scratch X 2.0)
Step 3 Polish (Deep Crystal ?????)
                          Step 4
Protect (NTX Tech Wax) Difference between this and Gold Class?
Step 5 Maintain (NTX Speed Detailer or Quick Wax)

Hope to be close to getting started.. Please let me know if these steps are correct?

                          Thanks for everyones help...
