just joined today. reason came to website was because of neighbors child hit handle of snow shovel against door of truck. i used scratch x it took out scratch mark but if you look at angle or run finger over you see small indent along scratch in paint surface. it is not a dent in door. it is like coating was removed when scratched. will more applications of scratch x smooth out?? the handle of shovel was made of plastic.

It's either a dent, or it's a topical issue such as plastic from the handle transfered onto your car's paint or you've rubbed through the clear coat and exposed the basecoat.

The basecoat or the colored portion of the paint which is under the clear layer is naturally DULL

The color-coat layer gets its gloss from the clear layer. If you rub through the clear layer you'll have exposed the colored layer and it will be dull.

Most people aren't strong enough or persistent enough to rub COMPLETELY through the clear layer of paint on their car with a gentle paint cleaner like ScratchX so this isn't likely the problem.

    Thus were back to,

It's either a dent, or it's a topical issue such as plastic from the handle transfered onto your car's paint

If you say it's not a dent, or the panel is in no way moved inward from the impact of the handle on the shovel then there must still be some kind of mark or marring caused by the ScratchX.

If this is the case, try applying ScratchX to just a portion of it and see if more rubbing makes this portion look better.

Just note if the paint does look dull where you've rubbed the ScratchX, make sure you're not seeing the color of the paint coming off the car and onto your applicator pad as this would be a sure sign that you've rubbed through the clear coat and exposed the basecoat.

    Hope this helps....

We'll move this to Detailing 101

A picture would help, you can even e-mail it to me if you don't know how to upload pictures into software like PhotoPost which is a standard type gallery used on forum.

      e-mail to mphillips@meguiars.com

Photo needs to be in focus to be useful, place your finger next to the problem like this to help the camera focus on the paint defect itself.

Another way to capture swirls and other defects in the paint. The technique is to place something onto the surface to enable your camera's auto focus to focus on the surface of the paint and thus capture the swirls and other defects in the paint.

The above photos were taken from this helpful thread for learning how to capture defects with your camera.
