  • does clay eliminate holograms?

    Hi all,

I had my car detailed by a body shop months ago, now I found there are bunch of holograms under sunlight.

now I don't trust them to fix it.

How can I remove those holograms ?

    clay bar is enough?

Do I need to use scratchX ? (I'm afraid I don't have the time to do whole car).

    Thanks for any advice.

    Re: does clay eliminate holograms?

Clay is intended to remove contaminants (flith) that is bonded to the paint, but sadly does not help to remove holograms (or scratches) from the paint.

You may be able to remove it with ScratchX, but you may need a buffer. It's hard to say without seeing it, and/or trying out a test spot.

Meguiar's has a lot of new products coming out in early 2009 that could help a lot at removing these, so if ScratchX or M105 (Available now, consider it a stronger version of ScratchX)) won't remove it by hand, you can try those out (or hire a pro).

      Re: does clay eliminate holograms?

Everyone wishes claying could remove swirls and scratches because it's so easy to do but like Mark stated, claying is only for removing contaminant that are bonded to the 'top' of the paint, the kind of things you could feel with your sense of touch like overspray or tree sap.

To remove any type of defect that is 'in' the paint like holograms, which are scratches in a pattern caused by either a buffing pad or an abrasive compound and usually both when used with rotary buffer, you need to remove paint. That is you have to level the surface of the finish with the lowest depth of the defects you're trying to remove, this mean finding a way to remove paint in controlled manner so that you don't leave swirls and scratches in the paint after your done with the process.

Click the link below as it explains this thoroughly.

If you're unsure as to how to navigate between pages in a thread basically you want to look for the little numbers at the top and bottom of each thread and these numbers represent the pages of the thread. Here's a picture,

thanks Mark and Mike for your advices.

I found a local (hong kong) car detailing shop which is Meguiars authorized detailing center. May be I will try to get their help on removing the defect.

A question to Mike, is a Meguiars authorized detailing shop usally trained with the correct detailing technique from Meguiars?

I hope to find someone to help remove the defect, after that, I will try to do all the detailing by myself (use all the techniques I learned from this forum).

        thanks

        Kith

I think in the case of Hong Kong that is accurate.
