  • Preparing for Winter

I have yet to get my car ready for the winter months and I am running out of time. My good cousin was going to help me with this project, but he has been busy with his stuff and never seems to get done. I just cant let my baby go any longer. I guess its all in my hands to get it done.

I was planning on doing the full out process. I guess the stuff that I know how to do and the rest will have to wait. It wont be as good as buffing it but, I think it will still turn out well.

I was going to claybar, polsih, and throw a few coats of wax on it and hope that will protect it for a few months.

The guestion I had was, I have always done it by hand. I am hoping to do it at work in the heated shop some weekend. They have all the power tools a person could ask for. I was going to try and get my hands on them. Is there anything I should be worrying about, or just do it by hand until I know what I am doing. I know I will have to do some by hand but. For cleaning, polishing and waxing, what kinda pads would I need to get inorder to do this?

Im sure you will all have guestions for me. Ask away and I will give ya what I know! Helpful hints and suggestions are welcome. Its Mequiars Form, I know I will get more then a ear full.

If you know how to use clay, do it. Then apply a coat of ColorX by hand and follow up with a coat of NXT 2.0 also by hand. Use the pads that come with the Meguiar's products to apply the waxes. Remove the residue with microfiber polishing cloths. Now is not the time to learn how to use "power tools" that you know nothing about. Good luck.

p.s. You have been posting about winter coming for over a month. It's time to "git'er done".

I agree... dont worry about tools...

Clay, ColorX, Nxt 2.0 by hand wont be terrible. Just work the ColorX in a little bit, save the defect removal for spring.

        Re: Preparing for Winter

Its finally here. I got a good start on my car this weekend. I got a couple hours on it yet and should be complete!. Just by claybaring makes one hell of a difference and loving it already. My clay didnt get dirty as I have seen others. I guess thats a good sign. after getting that done, I started using the Deep Crystal cleaner. I have been using alot of presure when applying it. I dont have much light so cant see to much but, I can still see swirls and scratches. Am I doing something wrong or will they come out after I do the wax and all yet? Im sure it would look better if I was using a tool instead of my hands?
I will have pictures and more after it is completed.

DC#1 wont likely remove many swirls, but it will get the dirt out. It is a very mild cleaner.

You would likely want to use ScratchX or #105 (better with #105) to remove swirls, but that is kind of a seperate job by hand.

Best to give your car a good general detail, then go back panel by panel on your spare days and remove swirls.

            Re: Preparing for Winter

I know winters are in SD are not nearly as severe as they are here in Wisconsin but this is what works really well for me. In November, I wash, clay polish and then apply two coats of NXT 2.0. I top this with two coats of #16 and this easily lasts through the snow, slush, salt and road grime of a Wisconsin winter. Since #16 is not easily available any longer I'd suggest #26 as a replacement.

When the weather is below freezing I use a touchless Laser Wash and I apply Quik Wax or UQD to the finish after. My car always looks starkly good compared to the others in the lot. I never let road salt stay on my car for more than a day or two. I frequently use ONR in the garage when the temperature is above freezing.

This system easily lasts from November through April, winters worst 6 months.

Using 105 is pretty much doing a buff job? It would require using a machine? I see its not cheap stuff either

You apply the 26 on top of the NXT Wax? Is there anything special about 26 that helps more?

How many times do you wash your vehicle a week? I have never used the spray wax before. I guess This wold be the time I would start.

M105 is a very high-end product that can be used by hand or by rotary. I personally have never seen another product offer the level of cut M105 does by hand without ruining the finish. M105 should leave either a fully LSP ready (last step product, ie your wax) or VERY close and a hand application of ScratchX will get you there.

                Hope this helps

105 is a compound that can either be used by hand or by rotary. It has alot of correction power to remove defects that myself and many others can vouch for and I believe a 12oz bottle runs you around $10 from ADS.(should be more than enough)It also wouldnt hurt to have a bottle of Scrach X incase 105 doesnt finish up good for you.
How to use ScratchX by hand to remove swirls, scratches and water spot etchings (http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1516) How to use ScratchX by hand to remove defects like these, Scratches Swirls Bird Dropping Etchings Water spots Scuff and Mars + + = Success! A couple of important notes to

^^working scratch x is simular to workin 105

I would also invest in a bottle of Ultimate Quick Detailer and a few good microfiber cloths which will help maintain protection after you wash in between waxes.

Search around the site, there is soo much good information out there.

#26 is in a way like #16 in that it is a pure wax without cleaners. As such it will layer over the sealant and provide added protection and durability.

During the winter I wash once or twice a week depending on how bad the weather and the road salt accumulation.
