If you can attach a backing plate to it then you can use it to work on paint.

The problem may be power. There's lots of DA Sanders in the wood market for sanding wood and while they work good for that, (using a thin piece of paper with abrasives on it to sand wood), most don't tend to have the power the Porter Cable unit has to effectively rotate and oscillate a large foam pad, (large compared to a thin piece of sandpaper), so it won't have the power to remove defects. The Porter Cable Polisher is the tool that basically started this trend of enthusiasts switching from doing their work by hand to learning to machine clean and polish.

Best thing to do would be to get a Velcro backing plate that fits the tool and then get a W-8006 Foam Polishing Pad and test it out for power.

From my experience with other tools of very similar specs R2600 is very unlikely to be strong enough even for the light cleaning, even if you used 5" light pads.
