  • Final Buff and Polish

Just finished painting car about 7 weeks ago. Black with clear coat.

Wet sanded clear with 1500 wet which didn't take much as there was little orange peel. I'm looking for advice on how to really make the clear shine.

I do have the so1o product but now thinking it might not be enough to cut the sanding marks from what I have read. I have experience in painting and using a rotary buffer, but it has been awhile.

    Let me here you adivce.

    Thanks, HarborOlds

The S010 should be enough, but M105 would definitely be the most aggressive compound you can get your hands on. It also finishes out very nicely.

You will likely want to follow that with some #80, and I personally love the gloss I get from #82.

I'm sure a few more guys will chime in here too.

Hmm... I've never heard anyone complain that Solo was not aggressive enough.

Anyways, Solo (M86) is one of my favorite products. It can remove 1500 grit marks and still finish very nice.

When removing sanding marks (1500), use a wool pad (Solo or W5000) with your choice of compounds (M86, M105, M95, M84, and M85). Then, you can use a polishing pad and a lighter cleaner or cleaner / polish to remove any holograms left over.

Thanks for the replies. With the SO1O kit in hand I will use the least aggressive wool pad first, see how it cuts and then go from there. That is the Meguiar way, right

I'll post pic's of the before and after when finished.

What do you detailers recommend for gaps and high edges? I have wet sanded the entire clear coat including high spots/edges. If the edges are taped to protect from the use of the rotary, do I go back over edges/high spots by hand. Or use a soft foam pad with light pressure?

          Looking for your experiences.

A good rule of thumb is to not sand where you cannot run your buffing pad, this would include edges, bodylines and corners.

It's a trade-off, don't sand these areas and have a little peel on them or risk burning through the edge trying to remove sanding marks out of them.

Luckily we've brought out a new compound that works great by hand but you may want to finish with #2000 to make it easier to hand buff.

Get some M105, use it by machine when you can and hand when you can't machine.

Thanks Mike, I did sand the edges but just lightly. I will get some 105 just to have around. The clear is thick so I should be Ok. We'll see!
