I recently got around to doing a more thorough job of detailing my wife's '02 Altima. A little history about this car...We bought it used last Dec on a rainy night(bad combo for buying car), but she fell absolutely in love with it. The car is a metallic burgundy, and upon closer inspection, had had some bodywork done, and a lot of scratches that were filled with touch up paint.
Anyways, the swirls bugged me earlier this year, so I spent a weekend going over it with the DA, 83 on 8006 pad, followed by 82 on 8006, and finished with NXT. This did a great job of removing the swirls. About 2 weeks ago, I finally got around to going after the scratches that were in the car that I could not get with the DA the first time around. Out came the Makita 9227 and the compounds.
First test was 83 on 8006 at 2.5 on Makita (1200 rpm). This did a decent job of pulling some of the lighter scratches, but not quite to my satisfaction.
Second test was 84 on 8006 at 2.5 on Makita. Worked pretty well, and I did about a third of the car this way, but it was taking 2-3 passes.
Third test was 83 on 7006 at 2.5 on Makita. This turned out to be the perfect combo for the job. The consistency of 83 allowed a little longer work time than the 84, and the 7006 pad was able to take out a lot of the scratches on the vehicle. A lot of the scratches that were filled with touch up paint were able to be polished out as well...they were not through the clear coat!
Followed up with 82 on 9006 pad on Makita at 1000 rpm, and the finish was looking really good.
Since the paint is older, and darker colored, I opted to throw in a polishing step as well; 81 on 9006 pad on DA, speed 2.5. This really made the paint look nice.
Finished with 2 coats of NXT 2.0 applied with DA, and the car looks absolutely awesome! Unfortunately, I did not take any before photos, but if I get a chance, I will take a few of the finished product.
