    Folks

My '01 Accord EX has alloy wheels. I'm not sure if they are clear coated, painted or merely polished. I've noticed this summer that my standard combination of a soft bristle brush and Gold Class soap is having an increasingly difficult time removing brake dust and road grunge so I think it's time for a more substantial cleaner.

A couple of questions: Does anyone know what coating, if any, may be on these particular wheels? And based on the coating, can you recommend a Megs wheel cleaner which would be safe on these wheels? Thanks!

I am not sure what type of coating that the rims have. You can contact either your local Honda dealership or Honda INC and they should be able to tell you specifically what they are coated with.

Until then, you can use either Hot Rims Multi Piece or Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner. Both are very mild and should be fine. I would start with Multi Piece first because it is even milder than All Wheel Cleaner.

They are likely painted, but it is best to contact a dealership to be sure.

The Multi-Piece has been relabeled as the Aluminunm Wheel Cleaner. It would be safe for polished or painted wheels. Those are my personal favorites as they are very mild, and very affective with a soft brush.

Keep in mind you can also clay your wheels, and if they are painted, can go over them with a paint cleaner. Or if uncoated, use a metal polish.

If a metal polish turns the rag black, they're metal. If it does not, its not metal, thus painted. If you use this test make sure to check in an inconspicuous area.

A paint cleaner 'might' work for that test as well, as it would be milder? Not sure?

I would go with claying the wheels first. Then try the cleaner wax on them.

Thanks for the ideas and recommendations. I contacted my local dealer and they had no idea what my 8 m.y. old wheels may or may not be coated with. So, I launched an email to Honda USA and we'll see what they come back with.

In the meantime, I'll stick with the Gold Class and scrub a little harder.

              Thanks again for the responses!

After you get them clean try using NXT 2.0 on them and re apply every wash
