  • HELP!! OMG! Interior Detail on exterior!

Have a new Scion tC, Black Sand Pearl - an awesome eye-popping finish when it's done right. I actually had other issues I was going to post, but today was my dumbest move yet.

I am truly a moron, no defense... will Megs Interior Detail do anything bad to the clearcoat/finish?? Other than not enough sleep, I have no other defense for why I just topped a layer of NXT 2.0 paste wax with a full layer of Megs Interior Detail!! Truly thought I had the bottle of UQD in my hand, so never looked at it as I worked.
It was threatening rain all morning, so I was working watching the dark clouds gather, hurrying and not thinking.
My neighbors already think I'm crazy with this car, so if I need to go back out and rewash to get this stuff off the paint, I surely will do that!!

    A little background:
I've washed this car quite a few times in the last few weeks. First with Gold Class and waxed with NXT 2.0 - looked good at first. Went to a car show/meet up at Mid-Ohio racetrack (what a dustbowl that is! ), and made the mistake of using UQD there without dusting first. A few days later I was horrified to see what looked like nasty swirl marks all over the car. We've had almost constant rain since, so had to wait until today to try to fix it.
This morning I washed with Deep Crystal (doesnt seem to leave water spots like the GC, polished with Deep Crystal Polish, then a thinner than last time layer of NXT 2.0 paste. (still learning)
Still difficult to get that wax off in hot sun by hand, but read here that topping with UQD helps remove dust and the dark splotches and streaks. So that's what I thought I was doing when I actually was applying the Interior Detail.
So, now what? Its pouring out right now, so rewashing isnt an option. Will this stuff wash off? Will it damage the clearcoat??
    Holy cow. what an idiot.

Youll be just fine! Nothing to worry about. ESPECIALLY you had used wax and sealant just a little while ago.

    You are good to go.

Thanks! I sure hope so! The label says it doesnt leave residue (it actually seemed to go on and wipe off just like the UQD!) - though I did notice it didn't smell the same! It also says its safe on metal, but nothing about paint.

I guess i should be grateful it wasn't ArmorAll, eh?

*sigh* i'm still going to worry until I can wash it off again!

Just wash it in the rain.... at least you wont have to dry it.... though the rain is pobably washing most of the IQD off anyway...

I'm glad it did rain, and quite a downpour, too. But washing too does make sense - the rain rarely washes all the dirt off the side panels, so why should it take off this stuff?
At least soap and a light rubbing should help dislodge most of it.
Any idea how long it will stay on the finish? I worry about it cooking in the hot sun all day - no garage!

Glad you joined the club. lol. I think quite a few of us have washed a car in the rain. Wash it now, The rain will rinse it . This way you know the sides are clean.

Don't feel too bad, mine was cockpit shine on the wife's dark green Taurus . Just wash it off and you should be fine. Oh yeah, as Mr. Michaels said, welcome to the club .

Re: HELP!! OMG! Interior Detail on exterior!

Well, I went out after it stopped raining, sun was already out and blazing away. One side already had water spots starting, so i gently rubbed them to see if there was any residue , and sure enough, they just smeared. I washed again, this time with GC, had used the last of the Deep Crystal.
Sun was so hot already, one side of the car just steamed when the water and soap hit it! (i thought i lived in cleveland, not the kalahari...)
Didnt bother to dry of course - but we drove to dinner in a downpour on the highway, so it looks worse now than it did first thing this morning. *sigh*

Got to thinking about my original post and i realized i wasn't completely clear. I saw the "damage" (from my stupidity on saturday) on monday evening - so couldnt wash until after work on tuesday. Not knowing if the swirls were scratches or there was just a buildup of UQD on it, i polished the whole car. It looked great with just polish. Then to experiment, I only put wax on the back deck and 3 panels on the drivers side. The hood and pass side were left with just polish. (they had looked the worst) The whole car looked great, no swirls or smears anywhere.
Hm, so, was it pilot error? NXT 2.0 on too thick? not completely removed? too much UQD? or just all done with the car too hot? who knew.

Still looked ok today, just dirty. So I waxed the hood and pass side after i washed today. And it was only the pass side that was all smeary when i checked after the rain. hmm
I understand there is a 12 hour "cure" time for NXT for a second coat - but does that also apply to getting it wet?

Lordy - i either need to move for awhile so i can get this squared away, or i need a garage!

you could try giving it a dawn bath or two, and starting over, if all else fails

as for your mistake, it's an easy thing to do, because the bottles are very similar

How great! I thought I wsa the only one. I sprayed All Season Dressing all over my wheel and tire 2 weeks ago. I thought I grabbed the Wheel Brightener---no such luck.

Thanks for making me feel not so alone in this madness. Keep obsessing over your car, that's a great trait!

I did the same thing on my wife's car, no harm was done and I just went over it with a regular QD. What a waste of one of my favorite products though!

so far so good! It's rained quite a bit since Sunday, sure that's helped. But it has been sitting in the sun, too.
I'm surprised I haven't washed it again! But it really does look ok - surface feels slick, not greasy, and the rain/water spots don't smear anymore.
It may have been a buildup of wax and UQD as much as it was the ID.
Thanks for the link there - I just skimmed it, will go back and really read.

Now i need some advice about the best products to do this car right. Get everything cleaned off and start over. But I'm on a budget here, so have been looking at Poorboy's products to put together a "kit". I like the fact that they can be used in the hot sun and also produce results by hand. Opinions?
