  • M40 - Application technique

I have an 88 Honda with black trim and bumpers.

The front bumper was slightly faded and had what appears to be a hint of something similar to clear coat failure.(A 4 or 5 inch line near the hood)

I have applied M40 once: I masked the bumper, sprayed a cheap paintbrush with product and painted/scrubbed/misted the bumper until it was "wet." Wiped it off after 20 minutes. It still looks wetter in some places after 6 weeks.

Now I am thinking: Work a little in until dry, keep adding product until you get the appearance you want.

Now I am thinking....I am making this stuff up.

    How do you do it?

Eventually, I am looking for a natural look. Subtle. Like a pearl not a diamond. I am not sure what you call that, but I have seen it here. I don't see it in my front bumper, for sure.

    Thanks, Jeff Long

Different plastics will react differently no matter what product is used, so yours may just like to get shiny.

Buffing off excess will be about the best you can do to dull it down, though you could try waiting 5 or 10 minutes instead maybe.

Definetly it's the surface, not the M40 which really makes the interior look great too. I even sprayed it in the wheel wells. This is the best it has looked in years.

I will reapply it and try evening out the appearance by buffing the wet areas more. Rear bumper looks like new.

      Thank you.

        I love #40, don´t get me wrong!
But i have come across some strange reactions on some cars, kind of smudgy look.
Had something weird happening on an Audi A3 2005, ended up with APCing off the #40.
        Test spot is important!

#40 for interior is probably the best i´ve used.

I agree you can't go wrong with #40 on the interior. For exterior use, I would just remove some off the excess until you get the look your after.

            Thanks for the feedback.

I just re-did the bumper after washing it gently with Gold Class.

I suspected I applied the M40 incorrectly, and wanted to try it again before APC'ing anything for fear that the bumper is dry with age and the APC might be reserved for later use.

This time, I applied the M40 to a clean foam pad and massaged it in to the bumper. I am very happy with it. It isn't the product. It was the application, less is more, adding as needed in different areas. Same with buffing.

Next time I will do a test spot with APC 10:1 before the M40 and see what happens.

I appreciate the feedback, sorry so late in responding.
