Top of small SUV

What do you use to wash/clay/clean/polish/wax the top of a small SUV in terms of a "step"?

Do you use a ladder or something else?

I have been using a metal step ladder to do the top of wifey's CR-V, but it makes me very uneasy. First off, it is a bit on the wobbly side, but leaving that aside I figure the pros must use something more practical.

Let me know what you use and where I can get one. Thanks.

I use an upside down 5 gallon pail, and sometimes a milk crate. Not a good idea and I really need to get something else. I was going to make a little platform out of wood but then it would be too heavy and take up more room in my garage. So one of these days when I feel like splurging I will buy myself something like this...

I use a small platform. same type you would use to get on a train.

You really do want one of those ladders. Also, that is a really good price and quite honestly, I use mine an awful lot.

Thats what I use for doing the top of my truck. Works nice. Also Husky sells a 2 pack of small step ladders. I use those also but its harder to keep my balance on.

Meguiar's has one of these in the Training Garage which also works great for getting elevated pictures of the work we do.

I bought the Werner Platform a month ago after having similiar experiences working on the top of a Lexus RX with short step ladder. The platform is more stable and speeds the process along as you can reach more with each placement of the platform. Word of caution for the more Senior Detailers (or is that experienced), it's quite a step up and down so take precautions if you have joint issues or inherent stability problems. Only place I could find one in the ST Louis area was Lowes.

i also use the back tire. Occasionally will use a Little Giant ladder.

That platform from Home Depot that BlueZero linked to can be found on sale for $20 sometimes. I missed the last time it was on sale but once it comes back on sale again I'm going to pick up one.

Until then, I also use the back tires and the door jambs.
