  • The Old Man needs help

What is the secret to cleaning the inside of the windshield & rear window? Either these windows are sloped a lot more than they used to be, or I am not as agile as I once was. Is there a secret to cleaning these windows or do I just have to suffer?

I've always wanted to try one of these... http://www.danase.com/glassmasterpro.html

They look pretty slick. If anyone has used one I would love to hear.

I have one and it works OK to remove the layer of dust, but it doesn't stand a chance to just wiping it with a microfiber cloth.

Cleaning the inside of your car's windows, at least the windshield is usually a little difficult because as you point out they are slanted.

A couple of tips for making it easier is to keep a few extra clean microfiber polishing cloths handy for your final wipe. That is, clean the window with one microfiber polishing cloth to remove the vast majority of gunk that's built up on the glass, but after you've removed the majority of any gunk or film residue, fingerprints and smudges off the class, give the glass a final wipe using a clean microfiber polishing cloth, this will prevent you from fighting yourself as a tainted cloth can simply re-deposit previously removed dirt and film.

I have one of those and used it for the first time last weekend. I first went over the windows with a microfiber and detailer line glass cleaner and then used as a finishing tool. Today I'm cleaning the windows at home and Mike's advice about two microfibers is right on the money. It works so much better to clean with one and dry with a second one....13 windows down...15 to go, break is over!

I've found the easiest way to clean the inside of the car windows is to have my wife do it. The sloped windows on newer cars are indeed a pain. It almost make me long for the days of my MGTD with the fold down wind screen..... but I like the convenience of being able to drive my present car without a tool set on board.

I had one of those wand things and threw it away. For me, it caused more problems than it solved. Often times it helped reaching the very bottom of the window, but not the sides or top because of the handle length. I would have to bring that into the car along with my regular glass microfiber and it was just to complicated. I've found that if you use a good glass cleaner (i.e. Meguiar's Detailer Glass Cleaner), you rarely have to clean the windshield. I normally just do the driver and passenger side every time I wash it and every once in a while I'll do the windshield. The main reason for that is because the Meguiar's Glass Cleaner doesn't haze and nothing touches the windshield, so it doesn't need to be cleaned every week.

I would also recommend the green microfiber glass towels from ADS, they work wonders!!

I use the back of my hand rather than the palm side. It allows me to get into tighter places.

Re: The Old Man needs help

I don't believe his question is about what products to use or technique and such. I think it's the physical aspect of getting your body crammed into the back seat and reaching all the way back to the lowest portion of the slope.

I have to say it's just a pain and the older and less agile you become (or... perpahs.... larger) the more difficult this is going to be.

I have to slide sideways to get into the backseat of the Stang and then turn around and sit on my knees while I stretch to the bottom of the sloped window. And since modern cars don't even have a nice even back seat it's a real pain to adjust to the different levels of the little bucket seats back there. It's a total pain and I don't think there's anything we can do about it.

But I, like the rest of you probably, will suffer for the beauty of my car. So in I crawl and contort and wipe and slither back out whenever needed....

My vote is for, as we get older its a pain. These angles are not made for us "mature" people. lol Its why the inside glass is my last thing to detail. This way I can go home and rest. LOL

Thanks guys, I am glad to see it is the fault of the cars and not me getting older. I too save the inside glass for last, because after that I am ready for a rest.
