A friend of mine allowed me to use his car for a test bed. First time I ever used #83,or #82, and I don't have a polisher.(YET)
My thought is "If you can Master Black, You can do anything"

Please let me know what you think, good or bad.
What could I have done differently

By the car owner's own words "This has not been washed for 2 years". The car is a daily driver and never sees a garage over it.

    work conditions: Brutal
90-95 degrees in the shade.humidity 90%+ You sweat just standing still

work environment: Tight, close quarters. No breeze but in the shade.

    Product list
    NXT car wash
    #83 x 2 (DACP)
    #82 (SFP)
    #20 (polymer sealant)
    NXT tech wax

The front of this car is "HAMMERED" stone chips all over the place
The before pictures do not show how much oxidation the clear coat has developed.

I tried to capture the steps I did on the hood by taping each step I did, but did not expect to have to do the whole care twice with #83 and went through two polishing pads to do so.
The first line furthest away from the camera was un touched the second was DACP first time.here you can see all the stone bruises. (that's not lint)

What I did notice was a lot of "buffer bounce" The DACP was getting sticky clogging the pad almost immediately. I tried to put a spritz of water on the hood but this only made it worse in the long run. So I worked #83 slower and over lapped by over half a pad once the pad dried out the only time I would get "buffer bounce" was when I reapply #83 to a new section. I needed to tip the polisher up on end until I could work the #83 into the CC. Once the #83 was worked in enough I could lay the buffer flat and work the whole section.
Both door pillars looked like this I think this is a good example of "clear coat failure".

This I took a scotch brite pad and scuffed the rest of the clear coat off

and repainted with a semigloss black paint

I started the project at 8:45am and finished at 5:00pm.
When the owner woke up at 5:00pm to get ready for work he came out and said "I did not expect you to repaint my car"...that made me feel real good.
This is the kicker I told the owner before hand I would do his car for the cost of materials.
He had all this done for $65.00
    Before

    After

    Thanks.

Wow thats a lot of work by hand ! Turned out great, one bit of advise is don't use duct tape on paint. Definatly get some painters masking tape to replace the duct tape, there is a good chance of duct tape pulling paint up and/or leaving adhesive behind for you to clean up.
If you dont play you CANT win!

            DETLMAN

I agree with you on the duct tape A.k.a. 200mph tape some nasty stuff. The auto parts screwed me by sending my order to the opposite side of town and I knew the job would take some time so what I ended up doing is, #83 the whole car twice then did a coat of #20 let it set for a while, So at least the tape did not sit on the bare paint, if the tape was going to pull at the least it will pull the #20 after I painted. I pulled the tape immediately so at the most the tape was on for 10-15min.the reapplied #20 and toped with NXT.

When I knew even less than I do now I use to use the duct tape to get the lint out of the felt wipers on the windows. That was then, This is now.

When doing this can the neighbor who owns a local car dealership offered me a full time job detailing HER high end clientele, Apparently the one she has they are not happy with. I explained to her that I real don't know enough about detailing to take on such a large responsibility so I respectfully had to decline.

Hopefully I have 10yrs before retirement, Maybe by then I'll know enough to compete at the level you guys are at.

Thanks all for the kind words an good advice..

Nice work Rich!...I thought that using the flat paint was ingenious.

You've got more guts than me!
