  • Need an opinion on my swirls...

My 1977 Porsche 924 still has it's original single-stage Mars red paint...but it is looking very swirled...and I am beginning to wonder if it can be helped at all, or if the damage is too deep to buff out...My swirls don't really look like the other swirls in pictures I have seen on this site...or maybe it's just me? LOL

Anyway, here are some pictures of what I am talking about...I tried my best to capture the swirls...

Here you can see the swirls in direct sunlight:

Everyone thinks their swirls are speacial....

But seriously, it isnt that bad, and being single stage might polish out even easier. The chips are stuck of course, but the swirls look standard enough.

Were you thinking of getting a G110 to use? Or by hand?

Haha thanks! I'm not really sure what to use to remove the swirls...I tried using Zaino swirl remover, with a random orbital buffer, but it didn't really seem to get rid of the swirls at all...just made the paint surface feel very smooth LOL.

I'm assuming I will need to use a stronger machine, like the DA polisher? I'm just afraid I will make the paint worse than it already is, since I don't have much experience using one of those... O_O

you want to get a paint cleaner and do test spot to a small area. See if you can improve a small area. This will tell you if you can fix the entire car.

Paint cleaner? Like a cleaner wax?

It's quite harmless to use, can you damage your paint? sure. but it's pretty fail safe. I used it on my Neon, Yukon and a friends Excursion with not the greatest results which is contributed to operator error, not the machine (I had it tested at an open garage) and need to practice, soon as it stops snowing.

Check out the List O' Links provided by Ryan aka: lilblkblt04 with loads of information on using the G100/PC.

I've read over and over again to use #80 for single stage paints with great results. Like Mike said, try a test spot. If doing by hand, can't go wrong with the Deep Crystal Series 1-3 (or skip 3 and use your favorite wax), I've had great sucess with them.

Just leave it alone till our first "Open Garage" in March and we'll show you how to fix it if it can be fixed.

Sign-up for March 13th Open Garage

What you need is the product we demonstrated for you last Saturday, that's M80 Speed Glaze, if your paint can be fixed Meguiar's M80 and GREAT technique will fix it. If we can't fix it... no company's products can fix it.

So have some patience, March is just around the corner. How long has the paint been swirled out already? Another 5-6 weeks will not make or break the results... IF the paint can be saved.
