  • New Paint After Accident

    Hey Everyone,

Well I had an 18 wheeler t-bone me causing a lot of damage to the car, insurance wanted to fix the car in which they did.

I received the car back yesterday and the paint was less the acceptable, they seemed to have washed my car after the repair with a brush and scratched everything especially the new soft paint.

That is not my only problem there seems to be a lot of orange peel compared to the rest of the car I am bring the car back to the shop tomorrow to have them paint a spot they seemed to have missed so I am going to talk to them about the orange peel. My question to everyone is what can I do to help with this as I assume they will not repaint because of the orange peel. I do not want to sand the whole side of the car as I do not feel confident doing that. I have a DA with basically the whole Meguires product line.

Also how long should I wait before claying/polishing/waxing as my car is due for its spring clean.

    Thanks for the help!

Call your insurance agent and tell him the paint job is unacceptable, The texture doesn't match the rest of the car and that they have scratched the new paint. Arrange to meet with the adjuster and show them what you object to and they should make the paint shop redo the job.

The problem is the insurance wanted me to take the car to "their" body shop I refused that and took it back to the dealer assuming the dealer would do a better job and do the job right. Insurance said they could not guarantee the work so I think they might just say tough luck

It sounds like you dealt with their insurer rather than your own. In that case document everything and take pictures of the issues. Be sure to do this in writing and mail a copy to both the owner of the dealership and to the insurance company.

Be polite but very firm that you will not accept anything less than making your car in it's pre-collision condition.

I delt with my insurance as here in Canada we have no fault, so my insurance will fix my car and seek the money from the other drivers insurance. My insurance company wanted me to bring it to a body shop that I never herd of I assume to cut corners and save money.

I hope it does not rain tomorrow so I can show the body shop all the issues. I will try to get some pictures up tomorrow.

You should have the insurance company's body shop fix it unless you have a really high end car. Insurance companies keep a tight noose on the body shops they partner with. If the work isn't up to snuff they will take care of it for you. If the body shop they deal continuously produce sub-standard work then they will be out of the insurance company's partnership. Body shops actually do good work when they are affiliated with an insurance company because it's steady business that they don't want to lose by cutting corners.
            That's the theory anyway.

It won't help you now, but in the future in might be good to know that most adjusters will ask your preference for getting a car repaired and if it's acceptable to them and the insurance company you can go there. At a minimum, they should offer you a choice of 2 or 3 and not just say, "take it here"...(and let my brother-in-law fix it).

This is what I would do. Sometimes you just have to remember the sqeeky wheel gets the grease. Good luck.

Well I had the body shop repaint it is better now however they seems to have missed painting the bottom of the door so back in it goes.

They also did a very bad job buffing lucky I was able to get most of the marks out myself but there are still some very deep scratches.

I can't refute that claim specifically, but the cynic in me says that the insurance company will want to save money. Therefore they will prefer the cheapest "Maaco" job that may look good now but won't in two or three years....

I'd be more comfortable taking the car to a factory authorized shop. BMW, for example, is very picky about how their cars are repaired. They specify how long (I think it's 8 hours) that pressure must be applied to a replacement windshield once installed into your car. True, that's not a paint-related illustration, but it's that kind of attention to detail that I want.
