  • Brown stains on rims question.

I have a '05 Honda Odyssey with painted/clearcoat rims. The pie shape sections have brown stains on them from brake dust and what not.

Anyhow, most if the stains come out with scrubbing and I even gave them a Clay treatment and they still have faint brown stains on them.

Anyone have any ideas on how to remove this or is this discoloration there for good?

    Thanks,

    Mark

What do you use for a wheel cleaner?? I've washed a 04 Odyssey a couple times (not mine) that had stains like you're referring to and I used Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner and it took the stains right off.

    Maybe try this??

After claying, use a paint cleaner. See if it helps.

It may be on there for good. Brake pads usually have some type of metallic material in them. Everytime the brakes are applied, tiny metallic shavings from the pads and the rotors are deposited on the rims, tires, and brake parts. As you can imagine, these shavings are very hot. There is a chance that these shavings will embed themselves in the clearcoat of the rims. My brother had a pickup truck with aftermarket clearcoated rims. The truck was lifted and wasn't cleaned very often. His front rims had the same problem that you are describing. The front brakes do the most work and so usually this problem is typically found to be worse on the front wheels. Just my opinion from experience.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Well, lilblkblt04 I never expected the Hot Rims Cleaner to work but I took your advice and got some.

My rims are now as near to perfect as one could expect for 3 yr old Ohio rims. The cleaner removed all discoloration.

          Thanks much for the tip.
