  • Touch Up Paint blobs

So my buddy has the usual touch-up paint blobs on his car from trying to do it himself. I have no good method for getting rid of them, but he seems quite intent on trying to do little wetsanding. It is down on the curve/corner of the bumper.

Can I at least advice him to use the 2500 or 300 grit unigrit papers, or the 2500 grit sanding block? Can try the PC or something on it afterwards to clean it up from there... no rotary is going to be used by either of us.

I dont really like the plan, but whats the lesser evil here if he tries something?

I have been putting off doing touch up on my truck. Just does not seem like there is a good way to finish it off. Be sure to take some photos. Good luck!

Lanka has a blob eliminator I've tried, it worked but I think the touchup paint can't be more than 48 hrs old maybe??? It made the touchup paint pretty dull looking, but nothing a little polish won't take care of. That maybe safer option to use if your worried about sanding through the clear.

Well, I was going to say to try and stay on the blobs rather than sanding a whole panel if possible.

Sort of why I was wondering about the sanding block, if it would let us stay more focused on a smaller point.

Lemme look into this Lanka. We are definately past 48 hours...

          Murr,
another option would be to tape all around the blobs, just leaving that area exposed and then sanding and polishing it, that way your not getting into unaffected areas.

My buddy Bob over at Danase.com carries two different Langka kits. I can shoot him a email tonight and see if he has any experience with them. One has the Blob Eliminator and the other is a wetsand kit. If nothing else, I would like to know also.

That was my idea. I knew I should have tried to patent it.

I use to use the mother's blob remover (made my langka) on my other car and it worked wonderfully. I don't know how well anything works on a metallic paint athough.

The Langka says to use within 24 hours.. did you find it worked after that?

I would just polish it out. Its the safest thing to do if you have never wet-sanded.

                        Hey Murr,

I would use a 2000 grit Unigrit Sanding Block and carefully bring down the high spots. You need to be real gentle as you do not want to pull the touch up out of the chips and you do not want to sand into the surrounding area.

Something to keep in mind, if the paint is metallic, most likely the flake in the touch up will be more pronounced after wet sanding as spraying a metallic is much different than laying the paint with a brush. In other words, the spot may appear lighter in color due to the heavy metallic presence. Since you are using a DA, there is a possibility that if you sand the surrounding area that you may not be able to remove the sanding marks so try and stay confined to the area as much as possible.

I have done this many times though I do use a rotary buffer for the buff out. Though it looks better being level with the surrounding paint, metallic paint touch up will stand out slightly depending on color.

Good luck and take some before and after photos.

Have to try and borrow the fiance's camera over the weekend..

It is a pearl paint, not metailic, so I dunno. Pulling the paint off might not be the worst idea.

He actualy used the phrase "used the pen to dab into the dots, then I used the brush to go back and forth over the area".

The touch-up paint looks kind of darker at the moment. Do you think the 2000 grit block is fine enough? I was kind of worried as it was about not being able to remove 2500 grit marks?

You could use the 2500 block it will just take longer. But if you are using the PC, the finer the grit the better. When you say he brushed it back and forth that makes me wonder how big are the scratches!

                              Murr,
The Lanka kit I have says from up to 2 hours to 4 days. I guess if you wanted to purchase one of these to keep around for your own use, then it would be worth a shot on your friends car, otherwise it maybe just easier to tape it off and sand it.
