  • My plan for the weekend !!

    Hi guys,

I am planning to do a big job on my 90 red miata this weekend !
Could you please let me know what you think about this. I have a lot a swirls on it...but the paint is pretty shiny.
I have 4 meguiars products at my disposition

    Fine cut cleaner #2
    Swirl remover 2.0 #9
    show car glaze #7
    yellow wax 26

I use a PC 7424 and have 3 pads (don't know the brand...a white, an orange and a black)

Could you suggest me how to proceed ??
I have also heard a lot of positive comments on #80 and #83 to fight the swirls...will my fine cut cleaner and swirl remover 2.0 be as effective ???
    I am a bit lost..

    thanks for your help,

    Greg

Re: My plan for the weekend !!

    Welcome to MOL Greg!

I have a '99 Emerald Mica Miata and in my experience, and from what I've read many places online, the Miata is notorious for soft, scratch sensitive paint. This means it's very easy for swirls to appear, but also pretty easy to buff them out. I would recommend that you hold off on the Fine Cut Cleaner and go straight to the #9 Swirl Remover. Use the intermediate pad of the three you have - not the softest, not the firmest, but the middle one. Sorry I can't be more specific but not knowing who made your pads I can't tell you which pad is which. If you can hunt down the info you will probably find that one is cutting pad (stiffest), one is a polishing pad (middle) and one is a finishing pad (softest). #9 on the polishing pad should serve you well on the Miata and really bring up a shine while knocking down those swirls. You may need a couple of passes, but I'd still recommend that over going too aggressive with the #2.

If this is original paint I believe the NA Miata had single stage red, so using #7 would be a great follow up to the #9, adding a nice bit of depth to the red. Follow that up with a couple of very light coats of #26 and that Miata will look beautiful.

      thanks Mike !!

I did it and the result is amazing, the red in deep and super shiny !

I put 2 coats of yellow wax, but I was surprised to still have red paint on my microfiber when removing the last coat of wax...Is that normal ???

      thanks

Glad it worked out for you Greg, that's great! As for red paint on the MF when removing the second coat of wax..........I suppose some is to be expected, but in all honesty I don't think it should be much at all. I say this because you should be applying a super thin layer of wax and, after it's dried, removing it pretty gently, especially with that second coat. I don't know off hand what the cleaning ability is of yellow wax, but certainly that would have some bearing on the result as well.

I also agree with the other posters:

              thanks Mike,
I was surprised to see some red paint on the MF even after the second coat of wax...it was pretty cold in Montreal this weekend around 41 F...can this affect the effiency of the yellow wax and penetration into the paint ??

              I didn't take any photos...:-/

As long as the wax was able to dry, and buff clean, you should be set.

If paint is coming off on the MF towel, sounds like a single stage paint job. This is normal for the paint to come off during polishing.

I agree, and to the best of my knowledge the 1990 Miata (in red at least) is single stage. But he was commenting on still getting red on his towel as he removed his second coat of wax, not while polishing. I suppose you might get some, but as I said before I don't think it should be a lot. Still, depending on the cleaning ability of the wax there may well be some. Then again, we don't really know how much transfer he's getting at this stage. Honestly, I haven't touched single stage paint in over 20 year (I had a long period where all I had were company cars and I didn't really care one way or the other, so through the car wash they went!!!)

You actually will get some SS rub off when wiping off wax. I saw it all the time on my old Escort's SS paint. When I did the DC 3 step on it, I always got "rub off" from the DC1, DC2 and DC3. It was just typical for that SS paint of mine.
