  • Quick Question for Mike Phillips

    Hi Mike. Welcome back!!

I finally watched the DVD with the black Corvette, and I want to use my PC for wax removal now. Unfortunately the Ultimate Bonnetts to fit the W7006 pads are no longer available. I have found a source of 8" Bonnetts. My question is this. Can I use the W7000 pad (8") on my 6.5 " backing plate? If I can use this pad, I will buy as many of the 8" Ultimate Bonnetts as I can get my hands on.

    Thanks very much.

ADS sells a version of the 6.5 in microfiber bonnets. I would just check them out

Thanks, Danny. Unfortunately as I understand it, we cannot buy from ADS in Canada.

          Check with bettercarcare.com

They offer small bonnets for the small Meguiar's pads and they ship to Canada.

Thanks for the quick response, Mike. I will see what they can do for me. So the 8" pads would be less than ideal?

The power offered by the polisher will be lost in the larger size foam pad. Technically you can attach the larger size pad to the polisher but it won't be effective at removing wax as the tool just doesn't have the power to push that much foam around.

Same thing goes for removing swirls with a large pad, the size of the pad just absorbs all the energy expended by the tool to make it effective at removing small particles of paint.

Mike, thanks for the followup. I am waiting for a call back from bcc, got their answering machine when I called earlier.

Mike, I ordered the Sonus DAS Buffing Bonnets and a Meguiars Softbuff 6.5" Cutting Pad 7006. Are these the right bonnets? I was looking around the website later on and found a bonnet called a Concours Bonnet. I'm wondering if I should have gotten that one instead.

                      Thanks.

Yes those will work fine. The Concours Bonnet is a specialty bonnet by Leo Cerruti and is made from a special cotton microfiber not a synthetic fiber, (I think, Leo will probably chime in and set the record straight).

I've used the Concours Bonnet and liked it, it has a much larger nap/loop to the fibers themselves which can actually help to break-up a continuous layer of wax making it easier to get it off.

If you really want to start drilling down, because microfiber tends to be better at removing product off the surface if you extrapolate this to the 9th degree an argument could be made to use cotton instead of synthetic microfiber cloths or bonnets because theoretically it will remove less product and thus leave more product on the surface. If the goal is to leave as much wax on the surface after application and removal then the case could be made to use natural cotton.

On the other hand synthetic microfiber cloth has been shown to be more gentle to the finish, so a case can be made either way.

Sometimes you just have to buy the product and try it yourself. (Then post a review on a forum to share your insight and experience with your fellow enthusiasts and the cycle continues... )

Thanks, Mike. I am leaning more to microfibers in my detailing supplies, and find that they are much more gentle on paint. Maybe next time I place an order I will get a Concours Bonnet for comparison.
