  • dust removal from car finish

My 1982 Buick Regal was picked up from paint shop yesterday, and I now have it in my garage.
during transport, it now has a layer of dust on it. what would I use to remove the dust, without scratching. the paint is 28 hours old. could I use Quik Detailer to get the dust off? should I wash first?

Do not use Quik Detailer on fresh paint! It is not body shop safe. The only body shop safe QD is #34 Final Inspection!

huh? Someone told me it was. I had a bird dropping on mine and used QD to clean it up. So what should I do? Go back and use scratch in the area where I sprayed QD to remove anything thats there?

I like those static car duster things. Looks like a stick with shag carpet on it.

No, you just used it on a small area so don't worry about it. How long has it been since your car was repainted?

A little over a month, used it to clean off bird droppings when it was 2-3 weeks old.

Re: dust removal from car finish

I just picked up a bottle of #34 final inspection, what should I use to apply and remove it? bottle calls for a gold class supreme shine microfiber(X-2010)
I don't have one of these, can I use a good quality 100% regular cotton towel? also, do I spray it directly on the dust, then wipe? I would use a seperate one for apply, and one for removal. safe to use same towels for repeated uses?

on a side note, how do I wash off all the accumulated dust on my california car duster? (found it in a closet, very dirty) any recommendation on a good car wash concentrate, and how long do I wait before it's first washing?
                sorry for all the questions

Re: dust removal from car finish

You are not supposed to wash the duster. The more dust it picks up the better it works. Or so say the directions on the CCD. OXO makes a good duster too!

Only use the duster on a "dusty" surface. It is not for use on heavy dirt. Same with QDs. If you QD every day or other day, you will not need to wash as long as it doesn't rain and/or the paint otherwise get muddy!

                    ok thanks
I hope the 100% cotton towel I mentioned previously will be ok to use for now. the car has a layer of dust on it, I can apply the #34 directly on the dust, then remove it with the towel? or do I run the duster over the car, then apply the #34, I just want to do it right the first time

Re: dust removal from car finish

Run the duster lightly over the paint first, then follow up with the #34.
The Supreme Shine MF towels work best. But if you have some top quality 100% cotton towels, like the no longer made Charismas, that would be OK. But they must be soft. I would recommend testing them on a small area first to make sure they don't cause swirls.

ok, thanks. the towel I was considering was a clean 100% cotton Cannon bath towel that I cut up. I could always go buy a 3 pack of terry cloth polishing towels if I need to.

Re: dust removal from car finish

                          Just to clarify...

Quik Detailer is not formulated to be used in a body shop environment, that is where fresh paint is being sprayed.

Once the car leaves the body shop it is perfectly okay to use on paint that is less than 30 days old because Quik Detailer doesn't act like a wax in that it won't seal the paint.

You can use M34 Final Inspection if you like but it's also perfectly okay to use any of our other mist & wipe quick detailers once the car has left the shop.
