  • New to detailing

I'm looking into buying some detailing equipment to take good care of my car and to work on the side doing some basic detailing work.
So far I think I'm going to need:

    PC DC 7336
    A 5" velcro plate
    and orange pad
    a few white polishing pads
    a few grey finishing pads
    26
    80
    82
    7
some of those pad cleaning packets

I have lots of other equip for handwaxing and washing, just looking to speed thing up with a DA and be able to do some minor repair like swirls.

What do you think of what I have list? am I missing anything major? Do you think I need the 82 and 7?
I'm not looking to invest a ton of money off the bat so would just using 80 and 26 work?
    Thanks for the help

    Re: New to detailing

The absolute basics for products are #83, #80, and a wax, and a tube of ScratchX.

#82 and #7 would be optional.

It doesnt sound like you are going with Meguiars pads, so cant help you there, but plenty of people use a variety of pads.

Definitely agree with Murr, make sure to get some 83 and scratchX. Also depending on what type of detailing you'll be doing (if you end up doing a lot) you probably wanna get some M66 too. Great stuff for customer who want a one step cleaner/polish/wax.

Sounds like your using Lake Country pads, that's what I started out with, if you've already got them, then you have what you need. But I recommend Meguiars pads once you wanna get some more.
      Good Luck with your detailing

yes pick up #83 and #80.

tube of Scratch X will also help.

look into grabbing some MEGS pads. might work a little better with the MEGS products. that's if you haven't purchased those pads already.

        but Murr said it.

I haven't bought the pads yet, actually looking for a good place to buy them.
What would the equivelent pads be?
          Orange......
          White.......
          Grey........

Would you use the stratchX with a DA or just by hand for small specific areas?

            Re: New to detailing

scratch x is meant to be used by hand.

you have to put a little passion behind your work when you use it. it might take 2-3 applications before you see the results you want. don't get discouraged.

you may though try using instead:

            wash
            clay
            80
            NXT x 2

            instead of

            wash
            clay
            scratch x
            #7
            NXT x 2

            80 works really well...

it does sound like Lake County pads. i've never used them so i could be wrong. but you can buy MEGS pads at autodetailingsolutions. they have package deals.

but equivalent would be what i think as the following.

Orange = Cutting (for meguiars this would be W7006 with a bonnet on it)
White = polishing (for Meguiars this would be W8006)
Grey (this is black isn't it) = finishing (for Meguiars this would be W9006)

like i said i haven't used Lake County but from what i've read over the years this is what it seems to be.

someone else may chime in and correct me if i'm wrong.

              Re: New to detailing

Another question. Say I used some 83 on a cutting pad or a polishing pad, would I need a seperate pad to use for polishes or maybe some 80? or could I just wash them out well?
And the bonnet to be used with the 7006, would that just be one of the MF bonnets?

Seperate pads for each product are recomended.

Yes, use one of the MF bonnets over the cutting pad for removing waxes. I think people tend to find it is easier to remove polishes/cleaners with a MF towel as they go.

                  Re: New to detailing

What about using 83 to remove swirling or scatches? still use a bonnet? Or even 80 to remove swirling, still 7006 w/ bonnet?
I really appreciate all the help

Searched long and hard and found my own answer to that question. 8006's

So I don't really need 7006 pads at all if I remove wax by hand with MF towels (which I do)
According to the "Product, Pad, Speed" thread I won't need 7006's.

                    Re: New to detailing

You might have misunderstood what the bonnet+cutting pad is for. The bonnet + cutting pad is only to remove waxes.

To remove swirls, regular cleaning, etc, you would want to use #80 with a 8006 pad, or #83 with a 8006 pad, with the foam pad actualy touching the paint.

                        Re: New to detailing

                        - 2 8006's, one for each product.
                        - 1 9006.

That'll get ya started at the most basic.

I might mention, if you order from ADS, you can mix and match a case of 6 pads for $50. Not sure how that works out to buying seperately, but a case of 4 8006 and 2 9006 would certainly be good, if the cost is comparable and fits your budget.

                          Re: New to detailing

in terms of your pads and which product to use them with and if you can use them with different products.

take a pad, take a black sharpie marker and write M80 on the back. write M83 on another and now those pads are only to be used for those products.

if you're removing by hand you need MF's and lots of them.

but i'd still recommend you get a 7006 to remove the NXT. the feel and look after removing with the G100 and bonnet is AWESOME!!!

                          you won't be dissapointed.
