  • Paint Question

I was rubbing some spots on my car out by hand using a fine cut compound and noticed that when I pulled teh rag away there was black on the rag, the color of my car. Did I get into the paint, or did I just take the wax off that was already on the car?

    Hi itlnstal2,

    Welcome to Meguair's Online!

It sounds like you're working on a non-clear coat car, however it is possible to work on a clear coat and pull gray/brown/black colored dirt build up off the clear coat. But... there will come a point when you have removed the dirt and staining and then when you work the same area you should not be pulling any color, (if it is a clear coat).

What kind of car and what year is it?

Hi itlnstal2, I had tried working on a metallic silver car before. At the time, I was using some harsh compound with a piece of polishing cloth. Just a few pass, I could see the cloth turns black. After that, I noticed that the body is revealing the basecoat! Anyway, that thing happened before I was introduced to Meguiar's products. Ever since that incident, I had never encounter any excessive paint removal with Meguiar's products!

The car has clear coat it's a 99 Ford Contour SVT. The products I was using wern't that harsh and I've done this on many cars before without this happening, although this car, mine, has about 6 or 7 coats of Meguiars Gold Class on it already, while the others had very little or no wax, and I know I didn't cut down to the base coat because it is still very shiny. So is it possible that I was just taking off old wax and embedded dirt particles?

That would be my guess. One thing for sure however, you should reach a point where you are no longer pulling color and your polishing cloth should remain the color of the cloth itself and the product you're applying. This is because the clear coat is clear obviously. If you continue to pull color, then this could be a sign of a problem.

Also note, with most paint types being sprayed at the OEM level and in the re-finishing industry, the basecoat does not usually polish to a high gloss. So if you have a dull spot where your testing, and no amount of polishing restores a clear, smooth, high gloss shine, this would be a pretty good indicator that the clear coat is missing in this area.
