Re: Any suggestions?
Hi, I just posted this pic of a wheel on my 05 Montego. They are aluminum wheels with clear coat. This blackis stain is only on this wheel and this stuff will not come off with normal wheel washers. Its almost like it is painted on. I managed to get a small bit off but not by means I would like to tell anyone about. I am looking for safe means.
Someone said to ask the guys on this forum so here I am, thanks.

Re: Any suggestions?
Keep in mind that what you are working on is paint.
It may be on a wheel, but it is still clearcoat and clearcoat is paint.
If it truly is a stain, I would try:
1. A cleaner wax. You most likely have at least one on hand. Spend a little time on the bad area with light pressure and a terry towel applicator. Let the chemical cleaners do their job. If you have Color-X, DC-1 Paint Cleaner give them a try.
2. Scratch-X would be my next step up in aggressiveness.
3. #83 Double Action Polish if the Scratch-X doesn't do it.
With the Sratch-X and the #83 DACP. you need a little pressure for the abrasives to do their job. Concentrate on removing just one part of the blemish and if it isn't doing anything, stop! Like any paint, it is possible to go through the clearcoat.
4. While it isn't recommended, some paint thinner on a rag with light rubbing can remove some stains. Factory paint is prtty durable and if you just dampen a cloth with the thinner and rub lightly for a very short time, you shouldn't damage the factory paint. Thar light rub should tell you if the thinner is removing the stain. If the thinner does remove the stain, use your cleaner wax or paint cleaner to be sure the thinner is completely removed. It will evaporate quite quickly anyway.
It's hard to tell from the picture, but you might have some clearcoat lifting from the surface of the wheel. If that is the case, stripping and refinishing the wheel is the way to fix it.Charles

What usually happens is that the clearcoat is no loger sticking to the paint or wheel. Quite often it has a cloudy look. You may need to get an expert to look at it.Charles

Re: Any suggestions?
From what I can see, it looks like something corrosive splashed on the wheel. Could it possibly be etching? Brake dust is very corrosive and I have a feeling its a combination of that and another chemical. Maybe a dog marked it when it had a coating of brake dust, dried and etched the clear. I know, it sounds ridiculous. I would say Charles pretty much covered it.

Re: Any suggestions?
You could try a paint cleaner like ScratchX, if the stain is topical, (on the surface), ScratchX should remove it. If the stain has penetrated throughout the paint, then nothing will fix it except to re-paint the wheels.
