  • Meguiars durablity stinks (just ask the Zaino boys)

About 8 months ago I detailed my truck, using two coats of #21 (I think it was two coats). About 2 months after that (or six months ago) I topped with #26.

Since then I have washed the truck maybe 5 times (maybe), never used a quick detailer on it. It also has spent must of the last 5 months outside.

Anyways, the water is still beading like day one and running off the paint. I apologize for the picture quality but it was late last night (and I was drinking).

Let's make all of the cars shiny!

Yeah, and if you have bad swirls just grab some Zaino and.....oh, wait, nevermind.

If you have a bad scratch, just grab the Zaino and.....oh, wait, nevermind.

Oh, oh......etching from bird droppings. Just grab some Zaino and.....oh, wait, nevermind.

Here's how you get rid of the DISO: just grab some Zaino and.....oh, wait, nevermind.

Wow!!! Look at that beading action!!! Meguiar's you say?!?! No foolin'??!!

No thats not bird droppings, that is actually cracked paint from somebody closing the hood with something underneath.

As far as understanding the thread, if you go to other detailing forums, you will see that many of those who are Zaino (amongst others) will constantly knock Meguiars for its supposed lack of durability. However, as I stated the last time I did anything to paint was over 6 months ago. The water STILL beads like crazy, the paint still looks great, ect...

The thread of this title was tongue-in-cheek, and I have so impressed with the fact, that despite my neglect on my own personal vehicle, the #26 is still holding verys strong.

And this is how I understood it from the get-go, so I played along with all the things Meguiar's can do you for your finish that Z can not.

And, yes, I used to use Zaino.

Threads like this tend to cause problems and we don't need any problems, so while it's fun to talk about this wax and that wax, let's keep things nice...

Everyone is free to choose what works best for them, there are a lot of people that like Zaino and it works for them, a lot of people really like Nu-Finish and it works for them, and it goes without saying for Meguiar's.

So let's keep the forum rules in mind and keep MOL the great place it is.

                        Thanks!

Yeah, the one thing that prevents me from trying Zaino is the price. Besides, most of it is technique anyways.

Isn't 90% of the "look" due to preparation anyway? A lot of nice boutique products have decent sealers or carnubas, but their compounds and polishes are just so-so, exceptions to that would be Menzerna and Optima - both are widely regarded on most forums. Me? I like #84 for stubborn scratches.

Sure it is. Have a look at a dark car after a proper wash, clay cleaner/polish and then a coat of a pure polish like #7. It will look absolutely stunning, and it doesn't have any protection of any kind on it.

All too often I see people posting on other forums about this wax or that wax, and I ask about how they are removing the swirls. Usually that is met with something along the lines of "well, I wash my car all the time so it's in good shape". Uh-huh. Unless a wax/sealant discussion is taking place on a detailing enthusiast forum most people don't think about all the prep work, they just want a wax that beads. That's it. Heck, I've even seen a guy claim that no self respecting professional detailer would ever use a machine of any kind on any car because such devices are harmful to the paint. You can't get through to a lot of these people, but some are willing to listen if you present things in a logical manner, and have something to back it up.

Over on the Miata forum there was a guy who wasn't happy with the state of his paint after using #4 Heavy Cut Cleaner with a cutting pad on his PC. While everyone else was telling him to use some other compound and go over it again, I pointed out that he was using the wrong combination of tools/chemicals for the job, made some suggestions, showed some examples of what can be done if you do things correctly, etc. He pretty quickly started ignoring the goofy stuff and struck up a dialog with me. In the end he got his car looking the way he had wanted it to all along, and thanked me in a PM for all my help.

On the PT Cruiser forum a guy was so gung-ho on Zaino but was impressed with some pictures I had put up that he asked for my recommendation on Meguiar's products. Someone else suggested an alternative boutique product to Zaino, but suggested he buy a bottle of #21, try it side by side against Zaino, and if he still preferred the Zaino I would buy the remainder of the #21 off him because I like it that much. He said that was good enough for him, but the weather has been less than perfect where he is so he hasn't applied it yet. Oh, and I did make a disclaimer on that site that this offer was extended to this one individual only!!
