  • other lubricants for claying

i just bought a smooth surface claying kit. inside theres the mf towel, clay QD and a small bottle of cleaner wax. i want to save the QD so what are other lubricants for that type of clay. i read an article saying that sometimes, clay leaves a residue. what are the other recommended lubricants to prevent this problem?

You can use a mix of car wash soap and water but IMO QD'er is better suited for this purpose. I have found the clay tends to fall apart with the soap and water. You may want to save the QD'er but if it were me I would go buy another bottle and use it for claying.

Speed detailer can also be used.
I'd never use a "soapy solution" as gb387 already pointed out that it tends to have effect on the clay.

I really recommend you use the QD that came with it. I tried using plain water once and I'll never do it again. I've never used soapy water because I've read too many cases of the clay falling apart.

I use Last Touch Spray Detailer at 1:1. It smells great too. Last time I clayed it started raining hard. So I just used the rain water, it worked great too.

I have a problem understanding why people try to save a couple bucks on QD. This stuff is cheap so what is with all these guys? Why are they so cheap when it comes to using a QD and yet spend a lot on an LSP or other items like a PC? When it comes to anything that touches my paint I want quality. When using clay I want a lube designed for that process. Why would one risk using a less effective lube at the possible expense of marring the paint?

I know there will be guys saying that they have used water or soapy water for years with no ill effects but my point is that why would you risk possible damage for a couple dollars. QD does a better job than water and even soapy water. If you really care about how your car looks why do you take that chance?

Quick Detailer cost $14,18 in Holland, it's much more expensive than water or shampoo. That's why people will look for alternatives.

you see megs products here in philippines are very expensive. a bottle of QD cost around 700 pesos ( P52 = $1 ) you do the math.
