  • Looking to buy a pc

    Hello could anybody give me some info on a pc. I'm new to this part and I want to get my car swirl free as much as possible. I'm looking to buy a pc and saw one in a flyer that's on sale for $19.99. It's a

    Simoniz 8in. Polisher:
    * Effectively polishes or waxes cars, trucks, RVs, boats and SUVs
    * Polishing head runs at 2,600 opm
    * D-handle with micro on/off switch for ease of use
    * Friction-resistant 8" cushion foam pad
    * High-impact, heat-resistant ABS housing
    * Long 2m (6½') cord

    That's the specs on the flyer. I'm on a budget too so was wondering if I buy this and use, say #83, would it help reduce the swirls?

    The $19 Simoniz polisher will not be a good chocie for removing swirls or defects. It doesn't have enough power to properly work #83 or some of the other polishes and it only has one speed. It doesn't have near the power of the PC. It can however be good for applying and or removing wax if that's what you want it for.

    In order to properly work #83 or #80, you need a PC (Porter Cable) 7424 or 7336. The Meguiar's G100 is simply a rebaged Porter Cable, but the G100 comes with a lifetime warranty instead of a 1 year warranty from Porter Cable. The PC is multi-speed, has lots more power and there's a much wider pad selection available for it.

    It may be hard to cough up the money, but buying the $19 Simoniz will only put you $19 farther from getting a machine that has the power to do the job right. Good luck with which ever direction you choose.

      Paints have changed, what use to work on older paints just doesn't cut it any more... (no pun intended)

          "Works great" doesn't say much. Have you used it to correct paint defects? What pads are you planning on getting for it? AFAIK you can only use bonnets on that machine, and they are available in a very limited selection. Also IMO the machine does not have enough power, and the pad size is to large, to actually remove defects. Btw, even though they might state "2600 rpm", what they mean is OPM's, otherwise it would be running at twice the speed of what a rotary is used at, which could definitely burn paint.

          Had a similar machine myself, but threw it out, since it was just to dificult to find bonnets for it, and I didn't find it was able to do any work. The only thing I can think of, is if you are able to get MF bonnets for it, then it could be used for removing wax. But since it was asked if it would be able to reduce swirls, I'd say probably not.

          Ng-rsx, have you tried something like ScratchX by hand on the swirls? How To Remove Swirls By Hand

          I'd suggest working by hand, and to save the $20. Then you could start saving up for the PC/G100.

              Can. Tire polishers aren't super great. The quality is alright at best. Trust me I have owned 2 Simoniz polishers and worked at Canadian Tire, if you want to save your self a lot of hassle just get a porter cable 7424(just ask the guys at the parts desk, and there is also a little card that tells you about "premium polishers")

              I am not saying that the Simoniz polisher will be bad, but the results that you get with a porter cable will be much better!

                I'm just asking what you have used it for. If it's for applying and removing wax, I'm sure it's ok. But for removing defects I wouldn't count on it. Problem is that the pad size is so large, that you can't apply enough pressure to remove defects, without having the pad stop spinning because of the lack of power... And from the looks of it you can't change the foam pad either.

                  Thanks for the replies. I decided not to buy the $20 polisher. Guess I'll be waiting to save up for a 7424 or G100.

                  Are they fairly easy to use for a beginner?

                  I have tried using Scratch X, but nothing worked. I used a foam applicator pad and worked in the same spot, but it still has swirl spots. Would it make a big difference if I clay then Scratch X?

                  Also is there a store in Canada, West Coast, Greater Vancouver Area, that stocks lots of Meguiar products more so the towels? Or is that something I have to order online?

                    I thought the G-100 was fairly easy to learn how to use. I highly recommend the DVD "How-To use the PC for Showcar Results." Reading about the techniques is one thing, but watching someone demonstrate them is something much better.

                    How many applications of ScratchX did you use? It depends on the defect you are trying to remove (as well as many other factors). I've had defects come out in one pass with ScratchX + a hi-tech applicator pad, but I've also had defects that are still there after several applications with a terry towel.

                    I don't know that claying before ScratchX will make that big a difference, but that being said I've always clayed first. It will also depend on the condition of your paint. I suppose it is possible that you are picking up above surface contaminants and dragging them around counteracting the work you are doing with ScratchX. My guess is that the recommendation to clay first is made for a reason and that is to always work forwards, not backwards. If it is easy to remove bonded surface contaminants do that first so they aren't there later when you are working on the below the surface defects.

                      Re: Looking to buy a pc

                      Bringing back and old thread. =)

                      So last night I decided to do a complete cleaning for my car. wash/clay/wash/scratch x/polish/wax. While my arm was falling off, I started thinking about the polisher that was going for cheap.

                      Here's my question, since Scratch X is used by hand I was wondering if I can use the polisher and have better results with Scratch X?
