  • A bit of a wax problem

Yestarday I used Gold Class Wax for the first time. An AMAZING product in terms of looks and ease!!!!! However I beleive I made a big accidental error. In the garage it looks great and spotless (2005 black Mustang) however when I backed it outside today, I noticed that everywhere I waxed, the exact pattern of how I applied the wax seems to be in the paint or more probably the clear coat!!!!!! I got caught up doing something yestarday between applicantion and wipe off and think I let it dry too long( not sure though.) I tried rubbing some of those areas hard with a microfiber towel and it seemed to work a bit, but required more elbow grease than polish or scratchX. Am I right in the fact I let it sit too long? And of course the question is, how do I fix this?

I was looking forward to yestarday's detailing for a week!! I hope I didn't cause a massive problem.

Thank You all for any assistance.

You probably did use too much wax. Either elbow grease or perhaps some Quik Detailer to help you remove the excess. If it's really bad, you can use some DC1 paint cleaner.

    Where in NJ are you?

I've also heard Mike Philips suggest using "same to remove same." Maybe try waxing again with Gold Class Wax. Try not to use too much wax when applying. A thin coat is really a thin coat. I've seen Mike apply wax and I found out I've been using WAY too much product.

Streaking can be caused by a number of problems, before using the Gold Class Wax, what has been done to the paint in the past to maintain it?

If this is a daily driver and hasn't been clayed, polished or waxed in the recent past, in other words, if the car has primarily maintained by washing and drying it and that's all, then Gold Class wouldn't really be the best product and instead either a cleaner/wax should be used or the paint should be cleaned before waxing using a dedicated paint cleaner like either Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner or ScratchX.

But before even this, after washing you should feel the surface of the paint and inspect the paint for above surface bonded contaminants. This could be tree sap, paint overspray or anything else that's in the air and lands on your car's finish and isn't' removed in a timely manner.

If you car's paint hasn't been regularly maintained, then this is the process you would perform working up to the Gold Class wax.

        Wash
        Clay
        Clean
        Polish (optional)
        Gold Class Wax

If your car has been regularly maintained, the do this and re-apply the Gold Class wax.

After washing, using a clean, soft foam applicator, apply a thin coat of the wax ans as you apply it work it in well to the paint, kind of like you would apply a skin lotion to dry skin. In other words, you don't want to just smear a coat of wax on to coat over the paint, you need to spend some time carefully applying and working the wax over and into the paint.

Make sure this is a thin coat.

Allow the wax to dry for about 10 to 20 minutes or until the wax swipes clear.

Once the wax is dry, then remove using your cleanest, softest microfiber polishing cloths.

Well I baby the hell out of this car. I am the ONLY person on earth with a 2005 V6 Mustang as a pleasure car! It's a year old with 1300 miles. That's it!!!!!!!! Before I waxed this time, I washed with gold class wash, then quik clayed it, and then waxed with gold class so the paint has been maintained. It is washed regularly and has been waxed once or twice prior. The only thing that has NOT been done to the car yet is polished and I don't beleive it needs it yet( Although I don't know when polish would be needed.). I hear it is good to apply two coats of wax or so anyway(I was gonna do that today, but didn't want to do anything after seeing this.)

You guys then beleive my best bet is to wax the car again and work the wax into the paint as I would a polish or scratchX? Do I gently rub it in or really pack it in like scratchX? Also how do you define a light coat?

          thanks again guys!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Setec Astronomy, I'm in the morris/sussex area. How about yourself?

              Yes.

You want to work it in gently like a pure polish, not ScratchX.

A thin coat is thin coat it should look almost transparent, here's a thin coat applied by machine, (sorry, it's all I could find in the Gallery),

Ok so asap I'll apply another light coat and work it in. That should rectify the situation while making the finish look even better?

One last question. Is it better to wax one section at a time (Hood, then fenders, etc) or the whole car?

I do one section at a time. I apply the wax, allow to haze, do the finger swipe test, then remove if ready.

It can't fail that way! If you apply to the whole car, then buff off, it will be harder to take off due to the wax drying.

If you haven't rewashed/rewaxed yet, I'd try QD with a microfiber to try and remove the left over wax. Less work, gives nice shine, and if the car is garaged, save some product until you need it next.

                          Quick Detailer Spray.

This includes "Quik Detailer" spray, "Speed Detailer" spray, "#34 Final Inspection" spray, "Last Touch", and others

O ok. I re-waxed the forward half of the car and I can still see a little. I'll try detailing it.

I prefer waxing the entire vehicle and then I go off and do something else for about half an hour to an hour and then return to the car and remove the wax. And as long as you applied a thin even coat you shouldn't have a problem with removal of the wax. Benfits to this.. eaiser on me and less detailing time and more time admiring your ride.
