  • What materials should I use???

I recently caused minor swirl marks in my perfect paint. I have a 2004 Silver 350z. After doing research I think the steps I am going to do are:

    1 - wash
    2 - clay car
3 - Scratch X or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner? (which one is better?)
    4 - Deep Crystal Polish
5 - NXT Liquid Tech wax or Deep Crystal System wax?

There are so many different Maguiars products so let me know what you think about my choices. Also, I am thinking about using Maguiars Cordless Orbital Buffer or Dual Action Polisher. Which one is better and which bonnets should I use?

    Your detailing challenged friend,

    Matt

    1.Wash
    2.clean/prep
    3.polish
    4.protect
    5.maintain

You're doing pretty good but to me it looks like you got lost. ScratchX, Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, and Deep Crystal Polish are all paint polishes. My question to you is, why polish twice?

Personally if it were me and my car, I'd be all over that thing with an applicator pad or clean terry cloth and ScratchX. I say ScratchX and hand application because:
    1. I don't know if you have the reformulated version of ScratchX that allows you to use it with the PC.
    2. I don't use the non-professional line, and have no knowledge of them of course with the exception being ScratchX.

If you so choose to use ScratchX with the PC, the w-8006 pad or another quality pad designed for polishing should work fine. If you decide on the other product the same pad(s) listed above will work to.

Just keep in mind that removing a defect will always come down to how hard the paint is.

As far as a last step product, NXT Tech wax all the way.

Bah completely ignore that post. It didn't come out the way I wanted to. So I'll just rewrite it since it won't let me edit.

      You're process is strong.

Personally I'd be all over that car with ScratchX with a applicator pad or terry cloth towel. In my experience I have never had to repolish with another polish when working with the retail line. If it were me I'd try to avoid polishing twice. However, If you feel it is necessary go with Deep Crystal Shine on the PC and a polishing pad such as the W-8006.

If you so choose to use ScratchX with the PC, the w-8006 pad or another quality pad designed for polishing should work fine. If you decide on the other product the same pad(s) listed above will work to.

Again completely disregard my last post, it just makes me look like a ding bat.

I might be wrong but I believe ScratchX and DC 1 are both paint cleaners, not polishes. I'm pretty sure there's no cleaner polishes in the Meguiar's line, just the Mirror Glaze line. Paint cleaners are what's gonna remove the swirls for you, but if you do have a DA, I'd suggest getting #80 from the MG line. If you will work by hand, ScratchX will work best but it will hurt your arm. Their cordless buffer won't be strong enough to remove most swirls so I'd stick with the DA.

        Good luck!

Yeah, thats what I thought about the scratch X and DC #1, that they are paint cleaners. I just wanted to know which one was the best to use. I would actually like to avoid doing everything by hand because it is so time consuming so is the Dual Action a lot better than by hand quality wise? If I did use the DA, what kind of material would I use to apply it and what should I use to take it off?

ScratchX is a more powerful version of DC1...

DC1 will clean and prep your paint to recieve the glaze (DC2) but it will not remove swirling, except on the softest paints.

ScratchX will remove swirls and marring, but does require some effort to do so.

Meguiars refers to the above as cleaners because they do feature some abbrasives (other compaines refer to minor abbrasives as polishes, hence the confusion).

DC2 is a glazing oil, which Meguiars refers to as a pure polish. Its sole purpose is to add to the depth and gloss of the paint; to make it look wet and fresh again. You should follow ScratchX or DC1 with DC2 because they do not feature glazing oils in them.

So,if I were you I would follow something like this...

            Step one. Wash

            Step two. Clay

Step three. Either ScratchX or DC1 will work depending on your needs. ScratchX is more for defect removal and thus is harder to use correctly. DC1 is more for basic prep, and thus easier to work. Basically ScratchX allows you to take DC1 one step further, but you also have to be willing to really work it hard.

Step four: Apply DC2. You want to replenish your paint and add some vibarancy to show off your hard work in the cleaning stage.

Step five: DC3 will add more shimmer or wetness (think like a dark pool or liquid) while NXT will add more pop and gloss (like taking step four even further, really popping the paint). I prefer NXT because its going to give you marginally better durability and I really perfer reflections vs. depth. Following DC2 with NXT really makes the refections jump off and into the paint. Again if your looking for that deep pool look of carnuba, then you might want to try DC3.

            Hope I helped.
