  • Irregular Paint Thickness

    Hi,

Is it normal to have differing paint thickness on one car? I recently bought this paint thickness gauge...

    Paint Thickness Gauge - DCF900

off eBay for US$37 (it is a real bargain)....

I have used the calibration thickness samples and found the gauge to be working and accurate. However, the readings taken off my car varies on different points on the car from 3.0 to 4.6

    Is this normal?

    Perfectly normal.

You want to look for readings way outside average readings such as very thin 1.0 or like on my 57 chevy 15.0 (repainted).

Take readings at many different points on your car and get to know what is about average. Look for readings that arn't consistant with the rest of the car.

Most newer vehicles read 4.5-5.5 or somewhere there about.

      Thanks Joe!

I was kinda worried when the reading on the boot reads 3.6, cos i've been doing tests on it for different products but never too aggressive; #83 being the most aggressive i've used and all on a PC.

I have never taken a reading when the car's new, so i won't know if the tests take too much paint off.

I've used scratch-x, #83, #80 on it. Would you think this takes off too much paint or the paint's originally around the 3.6 thickness?
